Urgent Care :: Lilo and Stitch not growing

What is the water temperature? Now about 78
Are you using a water heater? No but sunlight
How much water is in there? 3/4 full
Are you using a water conditioner? We have good water
Are you using any filtration? Water softener

What is the basking temperature? Now about 87
Is there a basking light? Sunlight
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? They did about 45minutes ago
What kind is it or what is it made out of? Plastic
Is there a UVB light? sunlight

What have you been trying to feed it? Pellets, earthworms, carrots
When was the last time your turtle ate? 2 hrs ago

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? now 30 gallon
Is the tank near a window? no
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? no

Have you read the Basic Care section? yes
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? yess

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? Well, they usually bask for a random time, Until i got a new basking setup, but they just basked, and they kinda jump out of the water

Hmmm, Safdar I think he said his basking temp is 87, which is ok, and his water temp is 78, which is fine for little ones.

Haimish - are you saying that your turtles were 2" long when you got them six months ago and they are still only 2" long? I just want to make sure I'm clear on the question.

Yep it's normal growth , you should be worried if they start growing really fast but that would only be because of over-feeding.

I'm a little concerned about your thirty gallon being outside. Does it have any protection from predators?

Growth can take a while and being that you've only had it six months, it's okay.

Safdar, I live in Cali. In the winter they will come into my room. Our house doesn't get alot of raccons birds cats and other animals because of the dogs. My dog ignores the turtles.

Alarm bells just went off - you need to protect your turtles from the dog. One of the most common things vets see when they see turtles is that they've been chewed by dogs. Your dog might not show interest for a long time but one day if he's in a funny mood, it could be bad news for your turtles. just be sure the dog can never get at them if he/she should get a notion.

On not growing for 6 months - one common cause of turtles not growing or growing too slowly is internal parasites. A vet would have to check a sample of the turtles' droppings to see if this is the case and, if so, what kind of parasites it is. Different parasites require different types of treatment, and the vet would have to make this determination.

What do you feed them and how much? I know you described their diet in general up above but could you give all the detail please? What type of pellets and how many? How often? What veggies and how much? Do they both eat with enthusiasm?

Once again, MY PARENTS DON'T CARE ABOUT THE TURTLES AND WON'T TAKE THEM TO THE VET, YET THEY LET ME KEEP THEM. I feed them 2 times a day. Now 1 earthworm each, or very small shrimp, and at night, 2 pellets. Wardley Pellets. Daily. Yes they eat very happily, they beg. My dog can't get up to them beacause they are on a very high table. He cant jump up so high, he is a teacup chihuahua.

There is no need to scream at her, she was trying to help you. You need to cool down a little bit, man..I seem to have already told you about the feeding (you are overdoing it with the earthworms, one or two, maybe three worms once every two weeks is fine, but feeding worms everyday is not a good idea since they already get enough protein from the pellets you are feeding them) yet you dont listen? Do you want your turtles to grow fast? If so, for what? So that they will require more space and become more expensive to keep?

Sorry but I dont think you are capable of taking care of these animals. I'd give them to a better home, that or watch your tone when responding to someone who is trying to help you and actually follow the advice that is given to you.
