Yes, there's a shell problem. Have the vet check him out in general - there might be other problems as well, like internal parasites.

 rrrr! I assume this is the same company that's been practically giving away baby RES with every order and has been banned from even being mentioned on this forum? I think it's time to pay them a visit!

Ugh! I went to check out their site to get some more info and they actually have a public forum for people to post on. There's a big black and red banner at the top of the forum with the following message:

"Due to user abuse this board has been placed in read only status.

A few bad apples have made everyone suffer and for that we at turtlesale [not reputable] are saddened.

As the owners of this message board we have the responsibility to step
in and make sure this board is not used to cause harm to those who use
it as well as turtlesale [not reputable].com.

Please bear with us as we
go throw the posts and member lists checking and deleting what is
necessary. After that time we will be searching for a new
administration team with new strict requirements before anyone is
allowed into a administration roll."

Ha ha!! Their own administrators were disgusted and fed up with the company's lowlife practices. I only had to read one thread on that forum to see that this is a regular practice at that place. They regularly ship dead or dying animals in horrible condition. They are rude to the customers when they complain and they compensate for DOA's by shipping another sick replacement. It's like a nightmare! How can a place that screwed up continue to exist??

Well, I sent an email to all their contact addresses with a warning message and now I'm going to contact PETA and the ASPCA in Florida to get them to try to shut those b*st*rds down! If all else fails...the "Gator Man" may have to crawl out from the 'glades to pay them a visit...rambo style!

Is the area that's dark lower than the rest of the scutes? It looks as if the scute has been taken off...Is the area soft at all? What does it look like with the shell dry? The two white marks on the scute look like the shell has been abraded or injured.

I'd clean the dark area with diluted betadine if you don't have anything else and let him dry off basking under proper lighting. (UVB and heat lights). If you have him seen by a vet, get some Nolvasan to keep the shell clean.

poor little guy didnt make it--- realy sad! --he got realy sick fast -- lasted almost 2 1/2 days my pastel slider that i purchased with him at the time is doing fine--- eating well (swiming)
and some basking i will post some pictures of him in the next couple of days. dont want to realy handle him yet, giving him a lot of time to adjust. THAT SITE I PURCHASED MY TURTLES
should be held accountable!!--- i dont know why they would do bussiness this way--the site is well designed-- all over internet---and very decieving for people who dont know any better--if they only took the time to care and the responsibilty to ship healthy turtles-- they would probably have many peop;e as return customers. TO THINK I WANTED TO PURCHASE THE CARAMEL SLIDER FOR 1800 DOLLARS THANK GOD THEY DIDNT HAVE EM IN STOCK!! :( THEY SHOULD BE BANNED FROM INTERNET SALES AND ADVERTISING GOING TO NOTIFI GOOGLE ABOUT THERE PRACTICES  THAT TURTLE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SHIPED IN THAT CONDITION!!!! I AM REALY SAD AND ANGRY

That place definitely needs to be taken out, yeah.

Any other ideas about what to do, or who to contact about it?

Sadly I think that site's advertising outstrips this sites. This site does everything it can to prevent people from buying from that site, but by the time people join this site they have usually already acquired their turtle so it's a moot point.
Unfortunately it's pretty difficult to get attention drawn to poor practices in the animal business, especially with a species like RES who are seen as rather disposable due to their cheap price.

The other hard thing is that it's hard to warn people about that particular site without mentioning it by name, and in so doing you might actually be encouraging people to buy from their store (either because they want a turtle quick, or they feel like attempting to rescue them). Either way, it'd validate their business.

You make a very good point the whole situation is SAD!! They should be legal to sell in pet--shops where they can be looked after an people can be Educated about theses turtles in the proper way .and if you know your getting a healthy turtle i wouldn't care how much they charge as long as they stand by the turtles and keep them healthy

I don't think that notice is about the company becoming better, I think it's about limiting the crap that people post about them on their own message forums. Which I just visited for the 1st time, and can I just say that seeing that many idiots typing in one forum is mind boggling. I think I'd never go online again if I had to correspond with "people" like that about turtle care. It makes you appreciate sites like this that actually care about turtles.
