I was just thinking about how small some pills are, and how we are directed to take one pill every 8 hours (as an example). Turtles are considerablly smaller than we are, with a lot less body weight and content. I would think it would be really hard to judge how much to give a turtle. I would also think that it would be really easy to overmedicate a turtle not knowing how much you are giving, or how much is needed.

Zain, I know you were desperate, but did you locate anyone on the net? Near or far? You could have even tried a phone call before offering your own meds. At least the vet could have told you if it was ok, or if it was safe to give.

I really don't mean to come off as a raving maniac, but I can't stand when people "experiment" on their pets. We all have a responsebility to give our turts (and our other pets, of course!) the best possible care, even when we're desperate.
Sorry, everyone...

yes i did actually reserch and try to find i vet ... i even found him and went to him... when i show him bob all he said was .." all i can tell u is that this is a turtle , i only treat cats and dogs " ... which have by the way become a rage in pakistan in recent years ... any way i did the next best thing i could think of.
bob has been moved from his orignal tank ... im keeping him warm... the temps here in karachi are around 82-83, its really hot so its hard to keep the water temp low, and i did try lowering the temp... bob didnot respond well... rite now he seems stable enough.

u know i crushed the tablets and after mixing with water gave him 2-3 drops ...while he ate . he disliked it but i didnt give him a choice... yet to be seen if it worked... im praying it did and i agree no one shud "experiment" on their pets... but then it all depends on the choices.

any way im wondering how he got sick in the first place cuz its so hot here ... so he never got a chance to be cold and i clean his tank every two days ... my other RES Bub seems to be doin well ...any ideas???

RI isn't caused by cold temps. It can be bacterial (inadequate water conditions) or viral... and that's all I know. Are you keeping both turts together?

I don't either... well, no sense in guessing at it, though. Have you tested your water? How's the sick baby doing?

My turn to post. Amoxicilin for turtles is mostly used for mouth rot rather than respiratory infection. A respiratory infection in turtles is usually caused by pneumonia which is usually treated with Baytril or ampicilin that are applied by injection. This is why it is so important to take the turtle to a vet for proper diagnosis. You should try calling all the nearest vets to find one that has even a little bit of experience with reptiles (even if it means a vet that's an hour away).
My babies: Tanner (RES), MR. Prissy & Ringo (budgies), Shinju (cockatiel)

I just want to clarify something so there is no misunderstanding...

Cold temps/drafts can bring on a repiratory infection. Pneumonia can result from an infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.

I didn't go back and reread the entire thread, so my question is, how long have you had your turtles? It's my understanding that turtles can carry illnesses for many months before showing the signs of infection. So, if you haven't had them long, then I suppose you could have gotten him with the infection. This is the reason why it is recommended to quarantine new additions to anyones family.

Since you have had them only 3 months, I would make a guess that he had the beginning stages when you got him.
