How's the water quality? If she hasn't eaten, try giving her a soak in Pedialyte (mixed with water).

It is fine. She is now not opening her eyes, nor eating food, opening her mouth to breathe and making weird sounds. Please help me!

By the way what is pedialyte?

It's a medication for children who are dehydrated.

I really can't think of anything else but having help from a qualified vet.

Please get your turtle to a good reptile vet ASAP. I waited too long for my turtle and we are now battling metabolic bone disease. Hopefully this is a simple infection that a little bit of vet care can take care of before it turns worse. Having to force feed a sick turtle is no fun!

Gauri, WHO ORS is the same as Pedialyte.. Try and get it. If you live in Bombay, take her to Petit Hospital in Parel or to Dr. Umesh Karkare in Khar, you can find his address online. You will have to forcefeed her probably but it's not too difficult. Good luck!

MY internet was not working for 2 weeks, so I couldn't view any replies. My turtle had started to eat but now eats very little. She now opens her mouth for breathing and no longer breathes from her nose. Because of that, now her neck is not moving that much as usual. When I reviewed the sicknesses on this website, the sickness 'Respiratory Infection' symptoms are similar as her condition. We suspect her to contain Respiratory infection. Please help me!

RI does need veterinary assistance for treatment. Keep the temps warm - water at 82F and keep making sure she eats.

Thank you for all your advices. Now luckily she is all right. But the edges of her shell are all deep green. That substance is the particles of her pellets. As turtles are messy eaters, all her food crumbs are sticking to her shell. Can you please tell me how to clean her shell?

Try a light scrub with water (same temp as the tank water) and a new toothbrush. How far along is her shedding?

What do you mean by how far along is her shedding? How do I check that?

I don't think you can not scare her, but maybe start with running water first then gently use the brush. Be careful holding her because she will be slippery and will struggle.

That worked. Thank you. We regularly clean her shell. But she is opening her mouth excessively. She opens it widely in the air and even in the water. She is scratching a lot too. We are going somewhere out next week and are going to keep her with someone else. We are worried for her as she is very moody and doesn't eat her pellets always. We want her to be fine even after we return from the trip in a week. Please tell the solution to the above problem. And fast...........

Your turtle needs to go to a vet for antibiotics. There is no fast solution. Without the antibiotics, if she has RI which I believe she does, she will die slowly. As for going away and coming back to a fine turtle. There are no guarantees. Keep the water temps at 82 degrees to help her immune system and keep her basking area at 95 degrees. Make sure her water is kept clean and hope for the best. Please take her to the vet when you come back.

As it was winter my turtle had a lot of trouble. It got sick and stopped eating. It sometimes only ate a few pellets. Her eyes are now again swollen but this time they are not pink in color but white! Whenever I keep her out for basking then I have always noticed that the edges of her eyes are pink. But when I bring her back then she opens her eye for some minutes but then closes them again. She is sleeping the entire time and rarely eating! First my brother and I assumed that white substance to be simple dirt because it would vanish again after a short time. But when we notice it now, then it is there for quite a long time.

Can you please tell me what that white substance is>????????
