I hate to say this, but he likes money, and its really hard to coax money out of him, even though he has a lot, he only spend money on things that are nessessary. (and since he performing the surgery wont cost him a dime), but back to the topic, I really hope he gets better, can anyone give me a rough estimate of how much it would cost, because to me, money is the main issue here.


PS. I'm not cruel to animals, I swear, In fact, when my pet dies, I get pretty gloomy for about a week or so.

I really hope he's OK, if its still there after a week or so, I'll take him to the vet, because I've been looking online since he grew that abscess, and another turtle owner's turtle had an abscess and turned out fine. I've had my turtle for about a year and a half now, and I'm really attached to it. (Does turtle have a sence of sound, because last night I was playing guitar to him, I know it sounds dumb, but I do dumb things when Im panicking.

I'm not commenting on the surgeon/money issue because it's none of my business but if your dad is one then he know something about pain, suffering and compassion.

Davis, I'm really glad you're so committed to taking care of your turtle, it's tough knowing what's right for your turtle and not being able to follow through on that but you're thinking of other options which is great... maybe you could ask for the vet visit as an early birthday present or christmas present. I know that's not an appealing option but I know it has been successful in the past with friends and whatnot Or could you ask your mother for help instead?

Or perhaps you can try to have a serious conversation with your dad. My boyfriend doesn't like to spend money a lot either, and when there's something that he isn't really thrilled to buy, sometimes we have to sit and discuss why it's neccessary... so maybe you could do some research on why a vet trip is needed and present it to your dad. It would show that you know what you're talking about and that this turtle is a good investment because you care about him enough to know how to take care of him and et him what he needs... good luck!

I'm sorry about your dad not giving you money! If I made about $200,000+ a year, a hundred dollars wouldn't kill me... It must be hard for you to deal with that emotionally... and just like Steve says, your dad would be one to know the importance of maintaining health.. I am going into the medical field.. I'm not a surgeon, but I know it would be VERY difficult to treat an animal, especially an exotic without any experience. I know how to treat people.. but I would never treat my turt... I have the observation skills to know if there is something wrong.. and basic knowledge of what to do until I get to the vet, but I would never administer medications to a turt, even though I know the dosage ranges, contraindications, side effects, etc without a vet.. Just because your dad can operate on humans doesn't mean he can on animals.. Turts have similar body systems, however, the ear is not made like a humans and is especially small. Any wrong incision could cause death and there would be no way to revive him.. And.. how would he measure vital signs? You can't take a turt's blood pressure, pulse, respirations, or temp.. You cannot supply any blood if a major blood vessel was ruptured.. I have a very very sensitive stethoscope, and I have tried to listen to heart and lung sounds through the shell, but even with the BEST stethoscope it was impossible. Vets may have one that is made for turts, but I really don't think so. I wish I could measure such things with my turt.. but I don't know the ranges for their vitals signs. Its kinda frustrating really, I could save a humans life, but I can't save a little turts if I had to... Just try whatever you can to get him to the vet.. By the way Davis, how old are you?

Its not what I want Davis. We are trying to give you advice to care for your turt.. we aren't telling you what to do.. You should be prepared for unexpected vet visits and new supplies your turt needs... you don't want your turt to suffer. A turt is a responsibility, and if you can't provide adequate care, your turt will suffer. So, its not what others want, or what you want, but it is about doing what is best for the care for your turt.

Unfortunately most parents think that RES are ok pets for kids. As it turns out, turtle care is more expensive than some cats and dogs. The start up costs and vets costs can be especially expensive. A lot of adults think that because the turtles are so cheap the aquire that it they are easier to replace than treat.

I second the mention of having a serioud talk with your dad. Let him know that this turtle is your responsibility and you want to show him how responsible you can be. Let him know that your research shows that your turtle needs help and you want to do what is right.

You should call some herp vets and get some prices. They can vary.
