i think he might have a case of shell rot.. i looked at the top of his shell.. and there were some little dents and ridge marks.. and a little bit of crusty ness....is redness of the shell a sign symptom of shell rot? or could the redness of the shell be something else?

If your turtle does have septicemia, it needs to be treated with antibiotics. Red or pink coloring on the plasteron or carapacet can be a sign of septicemia. Until you can seek medical attention, increase your water temp to about 80-82 degrees and basking area to 95 degrees to boost the turtle's immune system.

You really need to have a water heater.

There has been a few pics like yours over the past year with other hatchlings. I'm not sure if it is septicemia and may be more like bruising from an abrasive surface and inadequate diet. I don't recall anyone providing updates for these previous cases either.

Post Posted: Wed Oct 18, 2006 11:46 pm   Pink spots on shell

I don't know if you still can access it, but my turtle nemo had this same thing back in July. He got treated with some antibiotic shots and cream, but he's much better now. He's still shedding some of the old shell, but he's fine. He just got new roommates and a brand new 55 gallon tank. My post was on July 14th and I have pictures of what it looked like that are clear. It started out slightly pink and then turned red. It's very urgent to get your turtle to a vet.

I can't really tell if the spots on the plastron are red or brown. From the septicemia pictures I've seen online, it seems like you would notice a brighter red associated with it. Is your turtle lethargic and have you noticed any injuries that could get infected? Or is there anything in the tank he could hurt himself on? That might lend some clues as to the possibility of blood posioning. Also, you really really need a water heater, even if you luck out this time and have a healthy turtle, a turtle in too cold of water (esp. with winter coming) is very prone to illness.
