I spent a lot of money on my stealth heater, but I love it. It was around 50 bucks...I waited until I had a coupon to use with it.

I kind of view my walmart heater as a temp until I could afford the larger one. In all reality I tried to take the cheap way with everything when I started. I have now replaced about everything I initially bought. Cost me even more in the long run.

If in need of a heater walmart is fine and MUICH CHEAPER than any pet store.. they have several and range from 9.99 to 29.99 I recommend a fully submersibal one as aposed to a partial because that way you can put it on the bottom of the tank for better heat distribution.. heat rises! ... they have guides on the front to help with size for example "made for a 10-30 gallon tank" I reccomend at least a 100 watt.. they will all have adjustable temp gagues on them. I got a 200 watt tetra submersibal one for 29.99 that is working great and has a cool little light that comes on when it turns it self on so I know it is still working with out sticking my hand in there. Yea for the hell that is WalMart.. every time I try to go to an appriopriate place to shop for an item... IE a pet store for a pet heater ... I end up at walmart with the same if not better product for much less $$$$ damn companies that pay there workers so little.

I didn't pay that for it, that's why I waited for the coupon! I think after taxes and crap it was like $23 something. I should have clarified that. That price, by the way, was from my local Petland.

Petsmarts prices are cheaper online than in the store. I almost purchased from there, but I was going to have to drive all the way to Columbus...what I would have saved in price would have cost me gas. I'm glad that Petsmart price matches!

Well, I'll check Wal-mart since I'll be there today. I guess $29.99 is okay. And umm..what are rosies?

Rosies are Rosy Red Minnows. Feeder fish. They are sold in the fish section of the pet store and are really really cheap. They provide exercise and nutrition for your turtle and various other types of carnivores. Usually you get several at a time (I only get 4 at a time, some people will get a dozen or more).

I think last time I paid 12 cents per each at Petsmart. If the store is out of these minnows they may have little guppies which serve the same purpose. Some animals eat little goldfish but they are not recommended for slidders - too fatty.

They're alive, right? So how often do I feed them?

Yes - they're alive. If you're going to offer live food, I think it's recommended that you put in a batch every few weeks or once a month. You don't want your turtle to over-indulge (not good for his/her health), meaning you probably don't want a grown turtle to have any more than three or four little rosies a week on average.

Those minnows are pretty fast. I put minnows in Spot's pond but I don't think he can catch them unless there's something wrong with them. Four minnows last about a month with Spot! I think if you were to put them in a tank, on the other hand, they wouldn't last as long because of the smaller space and less opportunity for them to run and hide.

if you place in a little warm water before in the tank they slow down quite abit and only live about another 5 min or so so if you plan this along with feeding time it can make a slow turtle and a fast fish a little more fair.

Isn't that just a bit sad? Watching the fish get eaten alive?
