A solution for a tank that needs to be kept near a window that works for me, is a vehicle windshield sun reflector (the kind that are like silver bubble wrap). I have no other place for Fred's tank but in front of a sliding door, and the summer sun was starting to add a few degrees to the water temp. So I bought two, glued them together, and used three suction cups to attach them to the back of Fred's tank. An additional benefit is that there is no more brown gluck in the filter tubes. It is wonderful. This doesn't address the main problem, but might help with the algae issue.
