Having a turtle around can be quite educational for young children. :D

I don't know about box turtles, but it often takes a RES several days to settle down and start eating after a change in habitat. Maybe your guy is just nervous because of the changes. In any case, there are tricks we use with RES to entice eating. Hopefully someone on here with box turtle experience can give you some guidance on what works for the boxies.

Your turtle is stunningly beautiful, by the way. So colorful.

I feel the need to update this thread and provide some closure for posterity.

We're pretty certain at this point that we were misinformed of the gender of this turtle.

He seems fine other than the fact that he likes to burrow and hide, and still won't eat after some 9 days now.

We uncover hime and have him walk around bit. He seems curious, but once put back into the enclosure, he will go to the water, soak, and then shortly thereafter burrow in the nearest area to do so.

We have been able to maintain 50% humidty and 79-85 degrees temperature.

I think this thread has run its course.

Thanks to all thus far. We have learned a lot over the last two weeks.

Glad to hear of your progress!

One last suggestion.....you can try covering the sides of the tank so that he can't see out. That should make him a little more comfortable. Burrowing is quite normal, but adults usually spend a bit of time roaming during the day time.

Also, sometimes my boxies go through spells where they don't want to eat out of the dish. They want me to put the worms in front of them on the soil, let the worms start to burrow, and then "hunt" them. I tell them they're being ridiculous but they don't listen.
