Hey everyone,

I just found out today that my girlfriend's 13 year old cousin has had a baby red ear slider and a chinese pond turtle hatchling for a year. I was horrified to see the two turtles still in their Chinese bins (you know what i'm talking about). What I am horrified about was this:

-He has had these 2 hatchlings for ONE YEAR and they DID NOT GROW in size one bit! My 2 baby red ear sliders that were quarter-sized when I got them 2 months ago are now 2 times as big.

-They have been living in rancid water for 1 year. The kid told me his grandmom would clean the water every other day. There were at least 2 river rocks for basking, but the smell was putrid.

- The worst part was examining their shells. His red ear slider has red spots on his plastron, and he is very lethargic. The RES's plastron is faily soft as well. The Chinese pond turtle hatchling's plastron looks like it's been bleeding red...

I am guessing that both of these turtles have shell rot. I immediately went to target to buy a 15 qt bin, and then to PetSmart and burned 60 dollars on a small heater, filter, and clamp lamp with a 43w halogen light.

The kid has told me the red ear slider hatchling hasnt eaten in a while, and I can tell- the hatchling is REALLY skinny.

So right now, the two turtles have a nice environment that I created for them. I will post pictures tomorrow. I'll be honest though, I am not sure what else I am going to do.

Should I buy StressCoat and hope for the best? I'm hoping the correct water temperature, and an appropriate basking area is enough.

Not sure if stress coat will help. I'd try a few soaks in Pedialyte (unflavored, and diluted 1:1 with water) and give them some cod liver oil drops over their eyes. Keep their water super clean and warm. Can you get them to some unfiltered sunlight?

Here are some pictures and an update.

I bought iodine, neosporin, and the stress coat. I dripped the iodine on each of the shells and let them dry. I then applied neosporin on their plastrons and shells. I was amazed that I was able to SCRUB ALL THE RED off the pond turtle's plastron. There are still some red spots but I got 95% of them off. He appears more healthier now. When I put the 2 turtles back into the habitat, i added in stress coat. Hopefully it works out.

Now i have to make sure they eat.

The red ear slider is still lethargic as ever. I fear the worst for it...

Also, one thing Im a little concerned about is the pond turtle. I saw it bite at its own shell. I figure it could be signs of irritation so I scrubbed the shell again. When I put it back, it kept biting it again. Anyone have any ideas?

Currently, the water temperature is aroun 83 degrees, and the basking area is around 90.

I hope they do okay. Are they still living with the 13 year old?

Did you try the Pedialyte? Does the RES open it's eyes?

It will give him some electrolytes. Can you offer him some live fish and worms? Hold the fish by the tail and let it wiggle in front of his face.

I hope they are doing alright! And I have to say, steve knows what he's talking about. Been all over this forum looking for info on my turts shell issue and every one that he's ever said to do something on, it worked really well! Good Luck!!!

I'll see what I can do. THanks for all the help.

The baby red ear slider is still basking, but I see it go to the water's edge to drink so I guess that is a good sign. My girlfriend said it bit at presoaked reptomin pellets when she tried feeding it. I'm not sure if it swallowed anything though.

Leave some pellet crumbs in Pedialyte, it'll increase the chances of him taking some in when he drinks.

hey everyone. when i visited the turtles, i saw 1 greenish/transparent stool in the water, which means one of the turtles is eating. That is good. If I were to guess, I'm thinking the Pond Turtle ate something. The RES hatchling is still basking, but I bought a bottle of pedialyte and placed him a small bowl of it for about 5 min. When I put the RES hatchling back on the basking rock, it stuck its legs out, which may be a good sign? He did go back to sleep though.

I will go to petco tomorrow and buy a guppie for it.

Did you dilute it with water (1:1)? Why only 5 minutes?

Well, my friend (taking care of it) says that the pond turtle is eating and has a big appetite.

The green RES, however, is still about the same, but I heard fro her that it was swimming one time.
