Urgent Care

We just had a cold snap down here in SC, and when I woke up this morning, my roommates two RES were exactly as described above. I immediately warmed the water a bit, and put a heating lamp over them, put nothing. Shell of both is soft around edges, and I talked to him, and he thinks it may be that they are trying to hibernate because of the cold snap. He is gone right now, won't be back until tomorrow, but I don't think they have that kind of time. Can anyone think of why they might be doing this? I doubt they are dead, as it would be odd for both of them to die at the same time.

Do you know what the temps were? How long have they been in this state?

I do not know the temps, as he doesn't keep any thermometer near it. Should I take a temp?

And they have been like this for almost 4 hours. Earlier there was movement (when I touched their legs), but now nothing.

I can't find my thermometer, but the water is cold to the touch. I don't know what to do, or if there is any point in trying now...

Buying a water heater and thermometer would be a good place to start.

Not my pets. Not my blame. I just need to know what I can do in the meantime.

Can you talk your roommate into buying it? Or possibly rehoming them if he doesn't want to care for them properly?

Since your roommate's not there... I would start by trying to warm them up, maybe in a box with a light of some kind? I guess you probably want to warm them up gradually... Are they alive?

He's not here. As for right now, I don't think they are gonna last long enough for any of that to happen. For all I know, they might be dead right now. I just can't tell. I'm used to ball pythons, not turtles.

So, should I put them in a box with no water? Wouldn't that dry them out?

How would I tell if they are alive? They have been as described for 3 hours, but now there is no movement when touched.

Sorry if I seem snappy...I just don't want them to die, I love animals.

Dry docking is the term people use to describe the box scenario I am talking about. They can be out of the water for a while, but you do have to submerge them occasionally so they can drink. I will see if I can find some links for that, you would have to have a heat source of some kind, a normal light bulb will work. I'll see if I can find a thread about dry docking...

They are underwater now right? Do they have a dock with a basking light? Could you pick them up and examine them for signs of life

there is a small dock with a normal desklap right above it, that was the best I could do quickly. I took them out, put them in a box, and put the lamp over them again.

While they were in the water there was air bubbles around them. That's all I can see. They stopped responding to my slight touching of their legs about an hour ago.

Maybe when they warm up they will magically come back to life. Is the light producing heat? I think about 75 degrees would be ideal...
