Urgent Care :: ear abscess try to lance on my own

Tonight, after viewing a site on the web. I lanced or attempted to lance my turtle's abscess. I used the recommended products to disinfect and a antibiotic cream. However, the small insicion only bled at little and I applied pressure thinking that pus would come out. Not much came out and he still has the swelling. He is now in a clean envir. in no water and with a heat lamp. I plan to let him soak half an our twice daily and to clean the wound (which is very small) I feel quite foolish and hope our little friend can survivie this ordeal..Any idea would be greatly appreciated . I do not know of any vets in the Kitchener/Waterloo area here in Ontario but will continue to search.. Thank you to anyone with helpful advice...

Well, I believe you have done the right thing by not placing him back in the water. I don't know about the products you are using on him, but I'll let someone else address that.

There is a list of vets in the urgent care section. There may not be one close to you, but sometimes a long drive is what it takes to seek the help that you need for someone/something that you care about.

I don't know about the dry docking. There are sites out there with more in-depth information about these kind of procedures. This site does not encourage people to medicate and treat their turtles without proper and qualified veterinary care. Good luck.

Well Steve, I figured out of the water because the water has a tendancy to get dirty, and then it could lead to infection in the wound. Those were my thoughts. A vet would be the best though.

Water quality is definitely an issue (and possibly the cause of the abscess). The water should be as clean as possible and he should definitely be kept out of the tank while his medications are being absorbed. Those are also merely suggestions since we don't know what meds are being used and we don't know what the exact situation is.

Schaumont, contacting the site where you received your information might be helpful. Or trying to speak to other herpers or a veterinarian...

I think as long as the turtle were given a chance to hydrate periodically in clean water, he could be kept out of it for a while. However, since he still has a lump, it sounds like there still is some pus left. A herp vet visit would be good. There are herp vets where you are if you look at the links and do a little searching. Let us know what happens.

How did you get your turtle's head out? We tried to lance my turtle's abscess but couldn't get his head out. Did he get better?
