I don't think the problem with the shell is shell rot. I read that if you feed the turtle too much and he grows too fast they get this thick black grooves. One of my turtles grew very fast and I noticed the groove was thick. I have since regulated his intake and it is beginning to correct itself. I read that if a turtle grows too quickly, it will develop kidney and liver disease. If the shell does have a problem with rot, your vet will prescribe a solution that you rub on the shell once a day and also a calcium supplement that you administer with an eye drop. Hope this is helpful.

Your turtle needs a UVB light for reptiles.

An easy way to add calcium to their diet is to get cuttle bone. It's that white thing that people put in bird cages for them to bite on.

If you buy it you'll feel that there is a side you can stick your nail in easily and another harder side. You need to chip off the hard backing before putting it in the tank.

Once the hard part is removed put it in the tank and it will float. They will nip at it and eat bits off it which gives them calcium which is very valuable.

in case anyone would like to know, ive taken the turtles to a vet, and they both have ri, but prognosis is good seeing as thier mouths and tounges are a nice pink color, and the vet says the shells and bodys are in great condition (much to my surprise i was very worried) and i have to give them a drop of medicine every day, a lovely watermelon taste :D. im sure ive ruined their liking of watermelon for the future seeing as they absolutley hate the drops. thank you for all your help, i greatly appreciate it. :):)
