my newest RES opened her mouth this morning and seemed yellower then my other RES mouth (which ins't yellow at all). she came from a very poor rasied family and was treated very very wrong. she was kept in the cold and no food. is something wrong with her mouth that she needs to go to the vets? please help!

I'm really not sure on this, but I know with mammals that the color of the mouth is an indication of other problems. I'd wait and see what others have to say. I'll have to say that I have seen the inside of both of my turts mouths and I don't have a clue as to what they look like.

Is she eating? Swimming? Throwing up? Any behavior changes? please copy and past the form from this link http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2142 into the reply and then answer the q's with it... it'll help out a lot

she isn't currently eating, and no throwing up. but she is swimming and walking around alot.

How big is your turtle?
How long have you had it?

What is the water temperature?
Are you using a water heater?
How much water is in there?
Are you using a water conditioner?
Are you using any filtration?

What is the basking temperature?
Is there a basking light?
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on?
What kind is it or what is it made out of?
Is there a UVB light?

What have you been trying to feed it?
When was the last time your turtle ate?

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure?
Is the tank near a window?
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity?

Have you read the Basic Care section?
Have you searched the forums for similar situations?

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms?

In some species (but not all), a pale mouth can indicate anemia. You said she was being kept in poor conditions. Do you know what her diet was like (she must have been fed something)? What is her diet like now?

Is there any mucus or other matter in/coming from the mouth?

Is it a yellow or white cheesy substance?

If so, it may be an indication of mouth rot. Mouth rot is a fungal infection that turtles get in the mouth.

See what other people say.

If you suspect an illness, she should be separated from the other turtle. Can you answer some of the above questions?

Coloring can vary from turtle to turtle depending on genetics. Is there anything else going on with her mouth (discharge, mucus, etc.)? I think people already asked a lot of good questions here so I won't repeat them.

well now that i have had her awhile longer she is eating more and her mouth discoloration is gone. thanks!
