I Put some of that cod liver oil from the gel pills on my turtles eye last night, and now one of the eyes is even more swollen! What happened?

When i applied it think maybe some got in his eye? When i did it, he went in his shell all the way, and opened his mouth a little bit ( the first time he opened his mouth when i was holding him) I even think he made a little noise...Help!

I haven't had any experience with this problem. Do you have a herp vet you can take him to? If you're not sure, type it in the search bar and there should be posts that have a link to herp vets. Or check your phone book for vets, but make sure the vet you choose has actually seen and treated aquatic turtles. Other than that, you can wait for someone more knowledgable to reply soon. Good luck! :)

awww...
Are you putting it on the lids only? I guess just be careful it doesn't drip into his eyes. Wait for Marisa or someone else to give you more info.

How much did you apply (it doesn't have to be a lot)? If some got into his eye, imagine an oily substance getting into yours... Did you get pure cod liver oil capsules? By chance the eye wasn't poked with the q-tip, was it?

If the swelling is worse, it sounds like it could have been irritated (by the oil in it??). How is the other eye? I'd not apply it for a day or two and see if the swelling improves.

The squeaking noise happened only when you were applying the oil? He's not wheezing, is he?

He kept pushing the Q-tip away from his eye with his hand and moved his back legs every time it touched his eye... It was kinda difficult... He also went in his shell... Mabye i put to much on the first application... And yea it's nature made 100% natural cod live oil softgels... The first time, he wasn't closeing his eye, and i thought if i touched it he would. So i put it on the swollen lid above his eye, and then he made a quick whistle noise and went into his shell... Maybe i did poke him? :( The other eye is the still swollen, it's just his left eye in the moring, he was continuously blinking it..but he stopped doing that. He has been basking all moring and hasn't ran off the dock when someone comes around like he ussually does. The noise happened after the first Q-tip swipe. No, he's not wheezing. He's just on his basking dock with his eyes closed now, and has been doing that all morning, (wiith a few short 5 minute breaks into the water). Every time i touch his eye with the Q-tip, he struggles.

What are you waiting for exactly? Every new post I read is about your turtle getting a little bit worse! You need to bring her to a VET! Stop experimenting w/cleaners and oil, and what-not... you can't cure your turtle w/home remedies.

The hissing noise them make is letting their air out of their lungs so they have enough room to pull in all of their extremeties. (feet, arms, head, and tail)

amazingcc plz keep in mind that some people dont have the money to run their turt to the vet, especially before all other options are exausted. All he was doing was following the advice he recived on here although nothing beats a good herp vet there are many exsamples of people treating their sick turts at home. CV cream i do not have exspeirence w/ cod liver oil but is it posible to wet the q-tip w/ water before putting the oil on so it is dilluted a bit before you apply it? also make sure you take your time and be very gentle in your movments also be slow and try not to stress the turt out to much, i hope this helps :(

Thanks Andrew7769. I'm going to apply the oil to her eye, in addition to her other medication. I'm going to try wetting the Q-tip, so it's not so hard on her. Also, after i give her the shots (while her mouth is still open) im going to try to get some cod liver oil into her mouth. Thanks Andrew, i'll keep everyone updated on how shes doing. :D Thinking happy turtle thoughts!

I do keep that in mind, but sometimes bringing the turtle to the vet right away (especially w/those symptoms!!!), will spare the turtle unneccessary pain and suffering, and the owner from huge vet bills and heartache, 'cause the turtle died.
Out of curiosity - why are you giving your hatchling cod liver oil orally?

If you are, I wouldn't use a lot or often. It's high in Vit A and too much Vit A can be toxic. And if you try to force food/liquids into your turtle and don't know what you're doing, the turtle could choke if it goes down the wrong way.
