Ant bites could definitely have done it. They can kill not only small animals (the spread of ants is responsible for the virtual disappearance of horn toads) but also newborn calves. A friend of mine's mother fell in a field and was unconcious for awhile, got bitten badly by ants, and finally died from complications from the bites! They are vicious.

But it might have been something else entirely. Maybe he was ill and just didn't show it. It's hard to say.

I don't know if there's an appropriate age for letting a turtle out to enjoy the sun. They really do enjoy it and it's good for them too. Maybe one of the moderators can help.

I used to put my turtle in a small tank - a 10 gallon one - while I was cleaning his big tank. When it didn't have water in it he tried constantly to climb the sides, then would fall over on his back, and I knew that wasn't good for him. Maybe if I had put water in the tank it would have been ok. Now, I rotate him between his indoor tank and his outdoor pond when I'm cleaning one or the other, or else let him walk around outside (while I'm watching constantly).

I hope you get another RES. You sound like you'd provide a great home for him/her.

Thank you for your thoughts everyone. I am so sad, he was such a sweetheart. I have never lost a pet in such a tragic way. I thought I was doing everything just right. I am so glad I found this sight. The information (and the people :D) are so wonderful. A true animal loving sight!

The ant thing is horrible if that was what it was- we only had him out about 20 min. and literally the secind I saw the ants (little black kind) start crawling on him I ran him under the water-- immediately! I just can't believe it. I don't know what to think. If it was that or he got too hot in the bowl we had him in while we cleaned the tank. Just weird. And my poor little girl asks every 5 minutes 'wha happn Tulip?' AHHH I feel so BAAD!

I'm sorry to hear about your Tulip. The problem with ants is that they will automatically crawl under the shell and that could have been the problem, as others have said. If you saw about 10 ants, she could have already had some that got inside and bit her.

Just to be on the safe side and to ease your mind, you should definitely read through all the stickies at the top of each topic. That way, you'll know exactly what you need to do for any turtles you decide to get in the future.

Yeah, that's what I was thinkingb - that some got under his shell and bit him. Don't beat yourself up so much... it really was an accident! :(
