I put my baby RES in a large flowerpot in the backyard today for extra sunning. It has dirt inside with a few little plants to hide under. The sides starting from the dirt to the top of the pot are at least 8 inches. I left him in there and went inside, since a relative was reading on the nearby back porch and could keep a watch on it. When I returned outside to check on it several minutes later... it was gone. I tracked down my cats but they've all been sleeping. It's so hot none of those furry animals really feel like hunting, playing or eating. We have cat food in the garage so any other cats usually just go eat that. I didn't think we had any birds large enough to carry off a little RES. All I've ever seen a robins, cardinals, and blue jays (which usually stay away for fear of our cats). However, the only possible explanation is cat or bird. There's no way it could have gotten out on its own, and the earth is too tightly packed and dry for it to have buried itself. I guess I'll just give up since obviously some predator took it to who knows where, but I guess I'm just curious about what in all probability happened to it. I still really don't think it was a cat because none of them were around, and I think it was something that had an overhead view of the container. Any ideas? Thanks.

By the way, the flowerpot has vertical sides, and the "plants" were just a little grass. Nothing he could have climbed. The sides of the flowerpot are slick. The turtle was around 2 or 2.5 inches.

Timeline: I put him in the flowerpot, walked out to the front of the house to get the mail. There was a CD in the mail and I went into the house and listened to part of it (maybe 30 minutes) and then went to check on the turtle. Gone. Mom was reading on the back porch and my grandmother was there too. Neither of them noticed any animals or birds come by... but then I guess they were a little distracted. :?

Sorry to hear about your turtle. :(

Dogs and raccoons also come to mind as possible predators. I'd still have a look around the area and put out a shallow container of water in case he did escape himself.

There are no dogs nearby. Our back yard is open (no trees), and the flowerpot was a few feets from the porch steps in direct view of the bay window in the kitchen. I have never in my life seen a raccoon, and possums only come to the garage at night to eat cat food.

He probably burrowed into the dirt trying to hide. You should carefully empty the dirt from the pot.

The cats are looking less likely too. It's crazy hot out there and when I found one or two and tried to get them to go to the backyard (no trees=hot) they thought I was crazy. One came, but when he found out that he wasn't going to go in the house he went back to the driveway to sleep under a car. The other cat was sleeping under the car too. I doubt they went into the backyard on their own.

The earth was very hard packed and none was disturbed. I'll go look... but I don't think there was any way for him to bury himself.

I missed that you said it was dry, but it's worth digging up a bit. If the only two conclusions are that he was taken out or he is still in it.

Ok. Now I feel stupid! I did like you said and dug around the edges and sure enough about 3 inches down in the dirt there was a turtle entangled in roots that didn't want to come out! So much for getting sun!

I'm so relieved. Naturally by the process of elimination I knew he had to either be there still or something had taken him out. I was digging frantically around out of desperation when I realized he was missing since I knew he was a goner if he wasn't there. I just didn't dig 3 inches down! (Didn't realize they were such good burrowers). I'm glad to have been proven wrong! Thank you!

He's been in there for a few hours at a time before. I just think that the grass inside the pot used to be thicker and he was content just hiding in that for protection.

...Or he was too hot and was trying to get cooled down out of the sun. Be very careful with the temps while taking them out in the hottest part of the day. They need the coolness of their water to regulate their internal body temp when they overheat which in this case he didn't have, so he did the next best thing and burrowed down out of the sun and heat.

I suspect that he was too hot. Please do not ever leave your turtle in the sun unattended.
