Urgent Care :: DEAD TURTLE

As I recently posted at http://papa.messageboard.nl/7730/viewtopic.php?p=1125#1125 on of my turtles, Glubby, died yesterday. I don't know what from, but I had her for about ten years, and bigspots who lived in the same tank with her since I got is now depressed, and scared of me and my family. I don't know what to do...I don't know why glubby died...and I need help (I feel) to keep Bigspots alive. Please help.

Big spots is just laying under the water now...I keep checking to make sure she's still alive, but she seems so sad.

It's july and they were still in hibernation? That could be a problem. Sorry for your loss. Better wait for someone more experienced to come around.

Maybe get the remaining turtle some feeder fish to chase around.

I'm not sure if they were still in hibernation, however they weren't splashing for food. My mother gave them some crickets a week ago, and followed it up with turtle food, and little bits of uncooked beef...but they weren't splashing for food like they usually do.

It might help to know more about the setup/diet/etc.

Well I'm not sure what to say...15 gallon aquarium (I think), usually fed gold fish, crickets, meal worms, pellets, et cetera. But I doubt any of those things would cause this...at least not so suddenly.

I moved Big Spots out of the water and put her on the rock, and she's just lying where I put her...not moving at all. She seems so sad...I'll see about the fish thing though. Maybe it will cheer her up.

Do you have a uvb lamp? You really need to think about getting a larger tank. Neither of these things would cause such a sudden death, but you want to do the best you can for the one you have left. Read thru the main site some more about basic necessities.

I might be wrong about the tank size, but we do have a UV lamp.

Not just a UV lamp, a UVB lamp. There's a difference...

Are you sure they were in hibernation and not sick? How long were they exhibiting behavior you're thinking was hibernation? Where are you located?

Read your other post---cleaning the tank and having the bacterial levels drop is not going to hurt your turtles.

To find out the size of your tank (how many gallons it holds), multiply the length X the width X the height in inches and divide by 231.

Maybe you could find out what Glubby died of, and then you might be able to figure out what's wrong w/Big Spot?

Please do some serious reading on this site. Check about proper set up, diet, and care for your RES. Also, check the list of herp vets in your area. Since the other turtle has died, your other turtle could be suffering from the same thing. Did you clean the tank really good after the other turtle died?

Hey sorry I was gone. I found out (from my mom) that the tank is 40 gallons, just goes to show I learned my U.S. measurements really well. Anyways, we cleaned the tank before Glubby died, but not after...

The vet is coming out tomorow though, and bigspots doesn't seem like she'll die before then. We also got her some crickets last night, but she was unable to eat them like usual (they walked on her, the current pulled them away before she could eat them, she was afraid to eat them out of our hands, she even seemed scared of them) but once they were dead (at the bottom of the tank) we gave her some pellets which she ate.
