I have a land turtle and my child rubbed soap all over its face and eyes. It cant open its eyes and is blowing soap bubbles now. I have rinsed it out with water but worried I am doing more harm.

What should I do?

What was your child doing, making it look like Santa Claus? Oh well, kids are kids.

What makes you think you're doing more help than harm. Does the tortoise react to the wash? I would personally wash the face as well as I can and if it does harm take it to a vet.

Well, the soap most definetly needs to be rinsed out of the eyes. You know how bad it burns to have shampoo or soap in your eyes. Try to rinse with filtered water so the chlorine in the water won't hurt the eyes any worse.

What kind of tortoise do you have?

Not that this has anything to do with the topic, but it reminded me of this. Here locally, we had a 4 yr old use nail glue to glue his 2 yr old sisters eyes and mouth shut. Anyway, that just reminded me of that.

I agree with the rinsing. The turt may not like it, but it doesn't mean that you are necessarily doing more harm.

I would continue to rinse & wash the tortoise carefully. Do not leave the tortoise in water to soak though because land turtles can't swim & he will drown.

This might also be a good time to teach the kids that the tortoise is NOT a toy! ;)
