Hi all...I need some help with my turtle. I had bought two baby RES turtles about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I was on vacation in Florida and I had to drive back with them in the car. I know they don't travel well, but they seemed to get through it fine. When I got home I put them in a plastic drawer type container to make sure they were fine for a few days until I went out and spent a ton of money on turtles that might not make it. The one turtle started to get these white/gray spots on her skin and I was told it could be a funus type of infection, so I sucked it up and went and got them a real tank. Within two days she was fine and eating again. The other turtle seemed to be fine, but then as the one got better the other got worse. I bought a 10 gallon tank with a filter, heater, and basking area with a proper basking lamp. I'm keeping the water at around 85 since the one turtle seems to be sick.

The problems seem to be him not eating, he seems very weak, (sometimes he flips himself in the water and can't turn back over), he seems to be gasping for air when he gets out of breath, his eyes are swollen and he almost never opens them, and just recently he developed a white/brown looking spot on his shell. What is wrong and what should I do to help him? I didn't have a heater in the tank until just recently, so I'm hoping that helps. If there is anything else I can do please let me know!

Any other info you need I'll keep checking back to fill you in. I can also provide a picture of the turtle if need be. (someone will have to tell me how to do that since I'm new on this thing, thanks)

Thanks so much!

Julie,

I have to say, putting your turtles in a "plastic drawer" so you didn't have to spend the money wasn't the right move to make. You knew you were going to have to spend the money when you bought the turtles, so making them live in conditions that weren't very good wasn't the best move you could have made.

I would have to guess that 85 isn't the temp you want to keep the water at. As with all other animals, there is a certain temperature turtles are suppose to live in and changing that could cause them to react badly.

Please try and post a picture because I'm sure that could help the people on this board out. (they always ask for one) I think you should get your turtle to a vet as soon as possible though. (Yes, that means more money)

Good luck, Hope you find the help you need.

Your turtle is adorable!!! & he's got some very long claws on him.

Where is it that you got them from? Have you considered that they may have been in bad conditions before? I can't tell if that's a white spot or a camera flash on your turts shell there. Is it soft?

Are you going to take him to a vet?

Thanks...they are so cute, that's why I got them. The spot is not from the flash...the white spot on the bottom third panel is what I'm talking about. It just showed up about a day or so ago. I bought them from a place in Daytona Beach, FL, and this little guy seemed fine when I got him. He was very active in the tank, and he was the first of the two turtles to eat, and he was fine up until I put him in the new tank. I'm going to call a vet in town tomorrow and see if she can help at all. His name is Tai by the way. The other is Mai. Corny I know, haha.

I forgot to add...no, the spot isn't soft.

i am a little concerned about his eyes being closed is that just because of the flash. if he is keeping them closed all the time that is a prob. as for the spots i looks like he has the same little spots a lot of turts get befor they start to go into a shed. has he shed for you yet. as long as he is eating well and keeping his eyes open and clear i wouldnt worry. his shell looks good and healthy

I'm sorry to report, but Tai died the other day. I woke up in the morning and he was just floating in the tank. I had brought him to the vet and he got a shot, and i think he was starting to get better but I think he got caught in the water and didn't have the energy to get out. I gave him a proper burial and he will be missed!

I'm very sorry to hear the news. :(

Had the vet said what the problem was? What kind of shot was Tai given?
