I have a RES that's 1 1/2 inches; I got him in December 2013. He's been eating like a mad man (he loves his baby commercial pellets, kale, and romaine lettuce, but doesn't seem to care for his carrots or grapes) He's been basking normally, but he likes to try and swim up the sides of the tank. Today I noticed he wasn't swimming like he normally would, but I think I just scared him.

He has had this growing discoloration on his vertebral column. It's the same gold color as the rest of his shell, but it's just on his column. He also seems sensitive when I touch it. I clean his shell weekly with Vitashell, he has a cuttlebone, UVB, calcium supplement and adequate water quality and temperature. What could this be?

It's normal. I would cut down on the pellets a bit as his seams look a bit thick. Also, don't bother with VitaShell, it might actually be harmful. I wouldn't bothe with too much kale as well.
