Rosy Red Minnows are pretty popular, they usually cost about 8 or 10 for $1.

Did the vet say anything about the black flakes?

I think an X-Ray would show any sizable rocks very clearly.

If she's not eating, then I wouldn't expect much waste.

I would not force the syringe deeper, did you discuss this with the vet? Did they do a demonstration.

They can swallow when out of water but usually don't because it's difficult. I would keep up with the Pedilyte soaks with pellets.

Som other thoughts...

I would bump up the water temperature to 80F. Skip the water conditioner and use some carbon filter media. Look into a 5.0 UVB light. Look into a better basking area if she can't dry off.

hmmm, nope, I do not have "full editor" I just have "save draft", "preview" & "submit"
Vet says may be old blood, she said if it was new, it would be red. No, she did not show or give me any advice on using the syringe. She just gave me one that is bigger at the top to put the food in easier. I guess I thought it would be like feeding my rabbits with a syringe. I tried a thinner consistancy, but she didn't take that either.
I think I have the temp at 80; I will have to buy a new thermo tomorrow.
I do use a carbon filter system, plus I use a water conditioner. I will stop using the conditioner.
My light is a 2 uvb. I don't know what to use for a platform to get her totally out of the water. I have tried different containers that I have, but I have to somehow make steps or something for her to climb up to get on top of it. I am at a loss on how to do or get something better. None of the pet stores around here have any bigger floating turtle docks or anything that would work in her tank.

How long do you think she could be out of water? If I try to take her to GA, the drive is 13 hrs. I am not sure she should be out of water that long....do you?
I sure appreciate all your thoughts Steve.

Oh, when you see those options, you're in the "full editor". Below there is a tab for "Upload attachment". 13 hrs is fine to be out of water.

I bought another new thermom today; it is held with a magnet on the outside of tank, thermom inside the tank. I bought a 5.0 UV light & I bougth her some rosy red minnows....some rosy & 1 dark/black one. So far, nothing has happened. They are swimming all over; she is staying in the far corner. I have her out doing her pedialtye soak right now. I switched to the Walgreens brand of like pedialyte which is on sale & much cheaper than the name brand. A fella at pet stores says his RES likes carrot slices. I think I am going to try that also. At another pet store, they had a large RES, similar to mine that had just sold for $10 five minutes before I arrived. It was not eating & the owner gave it to the pet store. They gave it minnows & it ate them happily! lol I hope Ernie decides to. I think she is "p"ing. It smells like she is tooting, but I think that is her urine. I noticed it as she tried to get on her floating dock & then changed her mind or something. I tried to place her on it & she just swam off of it. She did the smelly thing the other day when I had just taken her out of the pedialtye & was getting ready to give her meds. I have not tried syringe feeding lately. Her water is cloudy, normal it gets greenish/nasty looking maybe this is because there are no rocks in the water. Ughhhh, 5.0 lite does not work! Drat, I will have to take the lite back & try another.

Hold the minnows by the tail and let it wiggle in front of her face.

I tried dangling the fish in her face, she did kind of smell it. I think the fish kissed her. But she never opened her mouth. A couple big chunks were in her tank tonight...... bigger than anything that has come out before. It was not rocks; but more solid that regular poo. I suppose it would be solid if it was impacted. I was hoping that would be the miracle & she would start eating, but nothing so far. :-(
I got the 5uv lite replaced & installed today also. A fella at the pet store who has a RES about the same size is going to tend her while I am gone to GA. I am taking her to his place in the morning. She will have a 20 gal tank by herself at his place.

It is now March 12, 2013. Ernie ate tonight after almost 8 months of not eating anything! How grateful I am for all the support & help....especially you Steve! During this time, I found out he is a she. Now to monitor her closely for awhile to be sure she has output. She has not had any output for a couple months nor had I given her any of her homopathic medicine. Sorry I have been dormant for so long without any updates.

That's great to hear. Be consistent with the feeding (and don't overfeed) and hopefully everything will return to normal.

She is not eating real cleanly. In other words, when she takes a turtle stick, some of the crumbs come out of her mouth as it disintegrates in her mouth. She is eating today also! Thank You again! I am sooooo happy! (I think my whole church was praying for her also!)

Hi All; here's an update on my 10 yr old turtle after I went to GA for 10 days after Easter. I let the pet sitter feed her in her 40 gallon tank, so I always plan to have to clean it when I return home....plus it stinks....even though she is not going #2! So I totally scrubbed & cleaned her tank, new filter all around, new clean water, etc. Tank is super clean in the morning; in the pm it is super dirty! :-) Why is that good news? She started pooping! Can you believe it? After almost 9 months! She also is now eating her food completely. When she started eating after 8 months, she was not swallowing the whole pellet, regardless of size. I think she might be getting close to being back to normal! Wow! I can't believe it! But I am sooooo grateful for all the suggestions & help I received throught this website; especially YOU Steve! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Lois
