I found this little guy, William, a fresh hatchling, two months ago. He eats Zoo Med hatchling formula, trying to switch to growth formula since he is now over 2". No issue there, he eats it all everyday. I've got a UV B/A light, w/ a heating pad attached next to his basking area, and he also sits in front of a window and gets full sunlight. His shell has been perfectly fine until about two weeks ago. I noticed the butt of the shell was a little soft and the ridges on the top of his shell where a little whitened(looks almost scraped), but I didn't think too much of it. Now, a lot of his shell is a little soft, and he is getting so dark, and not much of the beautiful green is left. Also, the markings on the bottom of his shell are fading, and looks almost like there is a foggy film on it. He eats really well and is very active, but I'm really worried about him.

Looks like he is getting ready to shed.

Mine is almost two inches and he's getting similar stuff along the top. I'm going to let the experts chime in here because of the soft shell part, but most of it looks like possible shedding.

A hatchlings shell will be slightly pliable, and some of it does look like shedding. It's hard to tell without a clearer picture.

The exact same thing is happening to my turtle, I have proper lighting/filtration/water quality and I have tested the water to make sure it's proper pH and the water isn't too hard. I first noticed it but the shell near the tail but it doesn't seem to be soft and I have gone over the spot with a toothbrush lightly and it seemed to be part of the shell, from what I have read every picture that looks similar everyone says it is shedding the scutes. At first I thought it might have something to do with the guy I got him from having limestone pebbles from his driveway in his tank. I am not expert when it comes to turtles but I work in the water quality buisness and I feel stumped. If an expert could clarify that it is infact shedding that would be AWESOME.
