I have broken tank nightmare in NYC.

I need to get this fixed replaced ASAP, but I have extremely limited funds. Does anyone know of a place to get replacement glass cheap in NYC (approximately 30” x 22” x 1/4”)? Actually the glass looks slightly under 1/4” thick –does anyone know the actual glass thickness that All Glass uses?
Other option is a cheap replacement 37-gallon tank?

Here’s the background:
I have a male RES approximately 7 years old, about 5-6” shell, named Mr. T. I adopted him when he was the size of a half dollar due to a roommate not properly caring for him.
I’m in an NYC apartment so have limited space: Mr. T has been living in a ALL GLASS 37 Gallon Tank [30 1/4 (L) x 12 1/2 (W) x 22 3/4 (H)] placed on the kitchen window sill with a built in base I made to extend the window sill and contain the filter. The tank’s a little small for Mr. T. but it’s the best I can do at present. When he was small I got him one of the (zoo-med?) hollow logs to bask on, but as he grew I wanted to fill the tank to the brim to give him more water/swim space, so I spent a lot of time building an nice above tank basking area [ATBA] from some old Plexiglas I had. Unfortunately, when I was almost done fabricating, due to the age or storage, the backing paper wouldn’t peel off the plexi. Hugely demoralizing. I don’t have time, funds, or motivation to redo this right now, so I’ve just been using it as the tank’s vertical extension (without a base for the turtle to bask on) so as to allow me to fill the tank to the brim and prevent Mr. T from escaping. I keep the log in the tank suspended from zip ties. Mr. T. likes to wedge himself between tank and log and vigorously and energetically wiggle to scratch his shell…sometimes rocking the log and banging it against the glass, which became worrisome. Due to the tank’s extended height, I cannot reach inside it easily now: in the past Mr. T would climb up on the log and I’d scratch his shell and he would wiggle like crazy under my fingernails and that would relieve his some of his ‘itching’.

Yesterday, I came home in the evening to find a huge ‘s’ shaped diagonal crack running the full span of the tank’s back, from corner to corner. Water all over the hardwood wood kitchen floor (and probably apartment below). My landlord is one of the most troublesome individuals I’ve ever crossed paths with and will be in the apartment this week, so I'd like to get this resolved NOW!!

I’m in a tight bind. I need to either replace the tank with one of the same dimension (this one was free on Craigslist and this size isn’t at all easy to find and/or is pricey) or replace the glass piece in the back. I’m handy and can probably do the glass replacement, though I do not look forward to it. Maybe I can just put silicone along the inside and outside of the crack temporarily (I do have a little tube of aquarium silicone)? I'e read some posts on the web about repairs. Anyone know of resources, inexpensive glass suppliers, etc, in NYC?

The other option which I dread, is to release Mr. T into the wild, which I don’t want to do, but maybe he would be happier living and laying outside instead of in a glass box?

Thanks a bunch for any ideas.

I wish I remember where we bought our glass, it was somewhere in Queens. I'm not sure I correctly understand how you have your setup but you can use plastic storage containers... I've found them as large as 60 gallons.

you can try the rubbermaid-type containers like steve said, or a kiddie pool. (assuming you don't have a canister filter)

13 bucks for ~200 gal.

My husband dropped a huge rock that created a spider crack in our tank.
I contacted All-Glass (I want to say it's a web form), but they called me within 15 minutes, and were very pleasant.
It might be worth a shot, if only to get the specs on the glass

Also, at this stage of the game I would hope no one would judge you for getting a cheap 10 - 15 gallon tank (depending on width/length of the tank and length of the turtle) just to get you past the landlord issue....obviously, not a long term solution, but will get you through the crisis short-term.
Then you can "play dumb" when the landlord arrives :)

Oh!
I read further...please do not release him into the wild! he has been domesticated far too long!!!

I have no quick fix for your current situation, but when it is all over, I highly recommend renter's insurance.
It covers damage to the premise as well as personal property (i.e., the tank). It is soooooooooooooooo cheap - here in CA, insurance for a 2100 sq. ft home (+/-) including all personal property is like $150 a year, payable in monthly payments.
A great investment for times like these.
Sending my best wishes!

Re: the landlord issue. I don't want to get deep into it, but new owner is a psychopathic crook, disbarred attorney, and my life has been only about lawsuits with him for the past few years. He's trying to evict the tenants on fabricated issues.

Mr.T. is in a rubbermaid type tub ... for now.
He has gotten strong and rambunctious as he's gotten bigger, he's also easily spooked (negligence in care from previous owner? ) ... darting across the tank and then slamming into the glass with his shell, then frantically trying to swim through the glass, often darting back across and slamming into the glass on the other side of the tank. This isn't what broke the tank, it was likely his rocking/swinging of the heavy log, which I'd been concerned about and planned to, but hadn't yet, addressed as part of the tank overhaul: the log was to be replaced when the ATBA was ready for basking (see OP).

Is it known for turtles to break the glass by banging into it with their shell when they get older/stronger, frisky? The glass s 1/4" thick (or slightly thinner, metric?).

I'd been in Brooklyn Botanical Garden when Mr. T broke the tank. I've seen turtles there and also in Prospect Park & Central Park and I always felt a little sorry for Mr. T that he had to live in a tank and not have the full turtle life experience and to enjoy nature. It would break my heart, but I wonder if he would be much happier in nature.

His behavior sounds normal and I've never heard of a RES breaking a glass tank. Captive RES could potentially spread new diseases to wild turtles and would be particularly susceptible to other kinds. Not to mention he would be more susceptible to predators and other dangers.

WalMart sells 90gal plastic tubs and at this time of year I can get HUGE coolers there for pretty cheap plus they are easy to drain for water changes u just won't have any under water viewing of your turtle.

He may even feel more secure in an enclosure where he can't see out and no one can see in

Thanks for the replies.
I have a built in stand that extends from a window ... pretty much the only space for Mr. T's tank, and in that location I'm limited to 30" width which is why I use the tank size/configuration that I have: it's the biggest capacity tank that fits into a 30" width space. Due to the size restrictions, the tank is 'high' oriented rather than wide and/or low (it's only 12" wide).

After scrupulous Craigslist monitoring, I was able to locate a used tank of the same dimensions as the cracked one for $40 delivered to my building, not a bad deal (it also came w/a hood lamp). New it goes for about $125 plus delivery costs. I haven't set it up yet as I'm awaiting some repair work to take place in my apartment and when that's done, I'll transfer Mr. T. from the Rubbermaid container to the tank. He doesn't look happy in the Rubbermade (he can't see out) and it only has about 5'-6' of water depth. He's a reticent turtle and it takes him some time to adopt to changes and after a few weeks he's still a little skittish in the Rubbermaid. Mr. T likes to swim, he likes to see out, he likes to play, look out the window at the trees and sunshine and sky, he likes to climb on his basking log, and he LOVES to monitor food preparation from atop his basking log where he has a view of the stove top (the tank is in the kitchen). He'll be happy when he's back in his replacement tank.

I did source a place near to me that sells replacement glass:$40 for sheet cut to fit the tank. I removed the old broken glass ... a laborious process. I was considering doing the repair, but then the used tank came up for the same price. The used tank has the plastic cross-brace cut off, so after all the research on glass repair, Ill cut a piece of glass from my old tank and silicone it on as a cross brace. I may even make a glass ramp for Mr. T. to climb onto his new ATBA, and maybe a small glass shelf for him to rest on or hang onto. I'll also, finally, do Version 2.0 of his ATBA, this time with fresh plexiglass. I'll post some pics when everything is done. I think he'll also need a new table top surface for his tank stand as the other one got badly warped and I'm concerned it might stress the tank's bottom and crack it. I've previously had the tank resting on a piece of styrofoam covered in black material to cushion the base.

I do wish I could find a tank 30" long but wider than this one, something like 20" wide. Maybe one day I'll build one from scratch now that I have an understanding of the process. Ideally, I'd like to see Mr. T. in a 65-95 gallon breeder style tank so he could swim more freely.

Lot's of work ahead.

Crazy, but resourceful :)
If you are thinking of using old glass from one tank in the new one, maybe check out some idea from glasscages.com - they do some awesome stuff...I guess the big thing is sanding off the sharp edges.

Mr. T - looking like a wise, stoned Yoda, as you say lol certainly looks like he is worth the effort.
Looking forward to the build thread as you start your tank creation
