I found Patch (a painted turtle) about 5 months ago and his eye did not look normal. It didn't look any different or change appearance until I noticed him this morning. It now looks very sunk in, sort of like it was gouged out or something, and was very red. It is now still sunk in, but no longer red--it's now white. I have 3 RES in the tank with him. They have gotten along fairly well although I have noticed them nipping at his tail in the past. It's hard to explain, but his bad eye used to have an eyeball and eyelid, albeit small. Now they're both gone and the eye socket is like a hole. Does anyone know what this is? Could it be trauma to the eye from another turtle, a nutrient deficiency, a bacterial infection, etc.? I quarunteened him from the other turtles for now and put water condition in the water that is supposed to help wounds, remove chlorine, etc. Is there anything else I can do to help him without expensive vet bills? Thank you.
