Urgent Care :: Help, I think shell is getting soft,

Hi, I bought a RES last monday, I thought 40w incandescent lamp would give him the UV it needs, but I think i am wrong since I think the shell is starting to soften. sun bathing for my turtle isn't possible since i am staying on a dormitory and no place where I can expose the turtle to the sunlight.. I tried to find a single UVB for sale here but I never seen even one.. Help! is there anything that can be an alternative for my UVB? Thanks!

The UVB bulbs that I am familiar with are the long tube style bulbs like you put in the strips above an aquarium. The UVB bulbs are usually located with the reptile stuff in the pet stores where I am. What kind of store are you trying to find them in? I know that places like walmart that carry basic supplies don't carry the UVB bulbs around here.

Mercury Vapor Bulbs are also available. The provide UVB and the heat that you want for basking. They are more expensive. Like the others, most likely found in the reptile section of a decent pet store.
