My RES' behavior has changed, very drastically, and literally overnight. It's jarringly different enough to very deeply concern me.

I've had Enbi for about 7 months; since he was no bigger than a quarter. While not necessarily social, he's never been unusually skittish for a RES. He's always approached the edge of his tank when I walk by, and been an avid swimmer. Yet today, all day, he's been hiding under his basking dock. He wouldn't even approach me to be fed; I figured at first maybe he was unnerved because I had just gotten new glasses this morning and don't look quite the same, so I fed him and left to run some errands.

But when I came back, I found all of his food sunk, untouched, to the bottom of his tank, and that's what really spiked my concern. NEVER, not once, in the entire time I've owned him, has he ever refused to eat. I got worried, took him out of his tank, and inspected him for any obvious signs of illness; his eye orbitals seemed a bit swollen, and his eyes seemed glassy, but they weren't sticky or shut. I dry docked him, and his eyes promptly cleared up, within 15 minutes, though they do still seem swollen.

I have no idea what could have caused this. There's been no major change in routine, habitat, or products used since I initially set up his habitat. I changed his light cycle a bit, to coincide with the natural winter change, but that was almost two months ago. I put rocks in his tank that a friend gave me, but that was almost six weeks ago. And I've generally rearranged his tank layout, but I haven't added or removed anything, just switched their placement, and that too was at least two, if not three weeks ago. He seemed unphased by the change; kept eating, swimming, and generally being his turtly self.

I have been having trouble with a reoccurring green algae bloom that nothing seems to rid me of, but I did a deep clean about six weeks ago and it's only starting to flourish again so these aren't even the worst algae conditions he's been under. I don't use algaecide, or any chemical other than the same conditioner I've been using since I got him, and though I did clean his tank and filter thoroughly, I did so without the use of any solvents, detergents, or other chemicals; using only a clean toothbrush, rag, and hot water--again, that was six weeks ago, at least. His nitrogen cycle was reestablished, and everything seemed fine. I'm not sure what to do.

One other thing I noticed was that he'd been basking significantly more often in the past few weeks. I didn't think much of it; I was actually kind of happy because his basking had been notably inadequate through most of November, and I figured it was a good thing. His eyes concern me; I haven't adjusted the height of his light to any noticeable degree, yet I vaguely wonder if maybe the extra time under the lamps might be hurting his eyes? He has a tendency to seemingly stare at them while basking, but he's always done that, since I've owned him, and I've never seen a problem before.

I have a question about the basking light. what type? how far is it from him? and how intense is the brightness? It could be whats affecting his eyes. It sounds to me like the swollen eyes and the hiding are part of the same issue. He can't see for whatever reason and so he hides.

I use two lights; an ExoTerra ReptiGlo 5.0 Compact for UVB, and the other I believe is an ExoTerra SunGlo 100W, for heat. I've already dismantled his tank--I decided to do another deep clean in order to rid him of any possible irritants--but I'd say his light was between 6-8 inches from the basking area.

Yeah that might be it. His eyes might be getting sun burnt from the spot light. I can recommend two things so you can decide.

1 reduce the wattage to a 75 watt bulb or
2 purchase a 75-100 watt submersible water heater.

I personally use tank heaters since they spend most of their time in the water anyways, and any splashes the turtle makes could shatter the bulb. Keep me updated!

Well he has a submersible heater too; the bulb is a tight-beam meant exclusively for basking.

A new set of peculiar symptoms has arisen: I finished cleaning his tank, and went to go check on him in dry dock while I waited for his water to heat--the taps are cold right now and the submersible has to bring it up from 61 degrees--only to notice that he know had white 'scuff' looking marks on his eye orbitals, with extremely dialated pupils, and was blinking a lot. I'm hoping being in the water will ease the blinking; for all I know he might be dehydrated after three hours in dry dock, and the dilation may just be because he was docked in a dim room, but the scuffs...concern me. His dry dock container is a very large plastic tupperware container; what with his constant blinking, I imagine his eyes are irritated, could the scuffs just be from rubbing his eyes (he already displays very long claws standard of males), or should I be worried about something else?

It's an eye infection. Guaranteed. I don't know how they get them but it happens. Pick up some zoo med turtle eye wash and follow the instructions. It works, but I hate to say that if it persists a vet visit is necessary. Good luck. :)

Alright. Also, for what it's worth, after further inspection I found more white on him; I think he has a fungal infection so I'm giving him saltwater baths for the next two weeks--he seems to enjoy them, actually. :P

I did a deep clean of his tank too last night, inside and out, and raised the water temp to 80--I was a mite worried he might have some underlying infection like an RI, since the eyes are the gateway to a turtle's health--and he seems to be doing a lot better. He ate this morning, and his behavior is back to normal. Even his eyes seem to have improved, although I will still treat them.

To tell the truth...some of his new rock substrate had gotten piled up in a corner and was harboring a lot of waste that I had failed to notice until I removed everything for the deep clean. I think it's what caused his fungal and eye infections; I feel really bad for not spotting the issue sooner. The algae bloom probably should have been a sign, but I've been battling with bloom for months now, long before I put the substrate in, so I brushed it off. Not my wisest choice, but I think it could happen to anyone. Still, the issue has been remedied, the substrate removed, and he seems like a much happier turtle already.

I know it sounds a bit paranoid in hindsight, flipping out over a 'change in behavior', but I think most of us can agree that after so long, we just get to know our turtles, and he was definitely not himself yesterday. Thanks for all your help, Marc.

Would you have any pictures of the white areas? A little debris or algae buildup would not really be something to cause an eye or fungal infection.
