Urgent Care

Hi, I guess this may only be slightly urgent. But my electric went out about 15 minutes ago, and the electric company estimates that it will be on in the next 2 hours (hopefully). My problem is, it is winter here in Pennsylvania and my apartment is already beginning to feel a bit cold. I can't even turn on the tap to get some warm water, I have an electric hot water tank. The thermometer on my tank is reading about 76*F. How do I keep Filbert from turning into a turtle-sicle?

Well in the future you could buy a computer UPS system and have the tank heater plugged in to it. But you might have to get a pretty beefy ups depending on your heater size.

Boxing day I'm probably going to pick up one at least that way I can protect against my giant HOB filter from loosing its prime

Another thing would be to keep the tank as full as possible. Water takes a lot of energy to heat (which is also good because that means it takes a while to loose its heat when its cold)

Depending on where you keep it as well. My tank is in my computer room which I keep warmer then the rest of my house so it always has the door closed keeping the heat in.

Try covering your tank with something to try to keep the heat in.

What about boiling some water and letting it cool before adding it to the water?

yeah, definitely have electric-powered everything. (what an electric bill!!

but my power ended up coming on about an hour and a half later. i kept my eye on the thermometer, and the temp didn't get below 74/72*F.

Hmmm, a very good point though. With winter snows already starting to hit some places, what happens if power's out for a day or more? How to maintain a tank that's lost heat and filtration, hmmmm . . . . maybe I should add turtle care items to my emergency supplies.
