Urgent Care :: betadine bubble up if infection present?

basically if my turtle were to have shell rot or any type of infection and i treat her with betadine would it bubble up if the infection is present?
has anyone here ever used betadine before to successfully treat mild shell rot cases?

It wouldn't bubble up. I don't think there are any medications that would do something like that. Chlorhexidine is considered to be a better disinfectant for turtles, though you need to know the problem and it's severity before you try to treat it.

yes i agree. thank you again steve. if their white spots get any worse we are taking them to the vet i already have the number to one in the area.

My female had a couple of those spots years ago. They came off, leading to a slightly deeper pit that was fleshy with a little blood. It quickly hardened and filled with scar tissue. But as I said before, if it gets bigger, then you need to see a herp vet. In fact, I'd just research vets in your area so you have someone you can go to if it ever becomes necessary.

leopard167, hydrogen peroxide will bubble up, but it does not necessarily indicate an infection (it's the oxygen being released). If you want to read about treating shell rot, you might look at www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/medshell.htm Instructions are for both using betadine and Nolvasan, which is the brand name for chlorohexidine. The latter is preferable to betadine because it encourages the growth of healthy tissue.

For severe shell rot, it's best to have the turtle seen by a herp vet.

yes thank you marisa. i cant tell you how many hours ive spent on this and althought very helpful im starting to suspect its a scar. ive been watching closely they are being fed really well and i already have a herp vet number saved in my cell, in my area. im just waiting to see if the small white spot gets any bigger or deeper. but their redness already cleared up and they are being very very well taken care of now. i think it was just from the situation they were in b4 i rescued them and malnutrition. thank you again tho. ill save the link. =)
