Hello,

I brought home a new baby red eared slider turtle into my 75 gallon fish tank that has four tin foil barbs and a few other small fish, around 5 days ago. I created a basking platform too.

On day 1, i tried feeding him tubifex what i use for my fish. He just ignored it. I took him out of the tank the next day into a small turtle bowl and put small gratings of carrot which he ignored again. I got tensed because of this behavior. I consulted a few online forums like this one. Everyone of them suggested the tank size, temperature parameters and i am adhering to them. I asked a friend who owns two healthy baby red eared sliders for some help and he suggested i brought home a companion for the baby turtle to coax it to become more active. I conceded and three days ago, i brought home another red eared slider exactly the same size from the same store. The new one enticed the older turtle to swim about in the tank and i was getting a bit more positive about their condition. However, they did not come out to fetch the fish food from the surface. They used to bask all the time. This is when i decided to introduce some live food, hence got some earthwoms home. I took the turtles out into the bowl and placed the earthworm. They both seemed to swim around as usual without bothering the earthworm. My friend's turtles however readily gorged up the worms. They are of the same size, probably a month older.

What should i do? :(

I took the turtles out to sunlight, they are active.. but not eating :( :( Please help. :(

The additional turtle might make it difficult for you if you have to separate them when they're older. As for getting them to eat, they might just be adjusting to their new home. They do have a pretty big tank, so I might try a small container to feed them in. Use water that is the same temperature as the tank and put one turtle in. Make sure the water is deep enough so that the turtle can flip over properly, if necessary. Start will a good pellet, maybe small bits of tuna or white chicken meat. Then the live prey like earthworms and feeder fish.

I agree with Steve. 2 RES are going to need a lot more room when they get older. Plus, if they fight you'll have to separate them. RES don't usually eat the first couple of days you bring them home. Mine didn't eat for almost 2 weeks! I find that leaving them alone and not looking straight at them (ignoring them) after you give them food gets them to eat. They're probably still afraid of you. Keep offering them food daily, and try not to watch them (or don't let them know you're watching!). Good luck and post pictures! =D

@ Steva and vear, Thanks a ton guys :)

I will try scooping a bit of the water into the turtle bowl from the same tank when i feed them this time. I am yet to get hold of a can of reptomin. Will do that today and try it. :)

@Vear, i cant take my eyes off them yet :( but i'll try doing that for their sake as you suggested :) Thanks again guys..

@Steve and Vear, Thanks a lot guys :)

I will upgrade the tank when they get a little older :). I haven't been able to get hold of a can of reptomin yet. I will make sure i get one today.

I will scoop out some water from the tank itself into the bowl this time when i try to feed them.

@Vear, I will try not to look at them or stress them out too much as you suggested. [I should be trying really hard then... i can't take my eyes off them yet... :P but for their sake, i will]

Thanks a lot and i'll upload pics very soon :)

Wooohooooooo THEY ATE :D :D :D Thanks a ton vear, i tried the ignoring thing... and Steve: I scooped the same water from the tank.

Fed them bits of dried tubifex. Chris started eating first and Chelsea followed, stealthily... :P I added more tubifex and this time, they ate it when i was watching... Lovely!!! :D

I'm thrilled :D
