[Ranger The Red Ear Slider]

When I took Ranger out of his tank today I noticed these 2 areas on his shell where the shell is chipped off and it's red. I touched it, it does not feel soft its hard and it does not hurt or bother him when I do so. My crappy camera couldn't get a picture of them. One is roughly the size of a l and the other is a tiny bit smaller then a o.
So what is this?

could he get burned by anything in the tank? for example, a heater? i apologize, i'm still relatively new to turtle trauma

How is his shell otherwise? How deep are these chipped areas?

He has nothing in his tank that would burn him. His shell is pretty good it still has some retained scutes but no soft shell fungus pyramiding or any other deformities. The chips are not deep at. They are just right under the scute and not into and soft stuff.

I don't understand when you say that the areas are red where the scute chipped off, but that the chips are not deep...Can you try once again to get a picture of the areas dry?

A thin layer of the scute is missing and its a little red on it. One of the spots that was red went away but the other is still there. I tried once again but I still couldn't get any of it visible.

I was able to get a picture of it.... because it got bigger! I looked closer at it and I think it's exposed bone its white in the center and red around it. Like I said above its hard and does no bother him when I touch it.
Please tell me what it is and how to get rid of it.

You might need to clean it out and dry dock a bit. If it's bone, you can leave in the tank, but if it's flesh, try dry docking for a week or so. It looks reddish around that area, are there other problems?

How can I tell if its flesh? It looks a bit spongy and hard.

Spongy would be the opposite of hard. Flesh would be soft. Perhaps its a scab?

Bone will stay white, fleshy areas will harden and darken.

It does not feel spongy if I look very close it looks like a sponge. Its still white, I think its bone what do I do?

I'd have him seen by a herp vet.

I don't think my dads going to be happy about that, He's already spend 600 dollars on my goat and I don't think he's going to take my turtle to the vet cause I already showed him his shell and he told me to just leave him alone. Is there anything else I could do?

It's a very odd spot to have it, but a vet visit would be a good idea. It's not a normal breach in the shell...
