I have a red eared slider who is showing signs of being constipated like: rubbing his tail with his legs, trying to push out feces and nothing comes out, hasn't been passing stool for a couple of days, etc.

I just read that giving red eared sliders a little bit of mineral oil on their food would help, but I am worried that it is not safe. Does anyone know if it is safe or if there is anything else I should do?

Oh, I did soak him in some water for a bit and it made him 'itch' his back end.

Prune juice.........just jokin'
I never had this problem with my turtles, and if i did, i never noticed.Try feeding lots of veggies. That should do the job.
If you're really concerned, someone with more knowledge in the subject will come along soon.

My big RES is 3 1/2 years old and he is around 9 inches long.

He hasn't been himself lately and is sleeping more over the last couple of days. He did squirt out some liquid late last night, so I think that's a good sign.

He's kicking at his butt while he's swimming around? You said you put him in some water, but was it a bit warmer than he's used to? If not, you might try it. The warmth helps the insides relax and it might help him eliminate.

What's his diet like? Do you have gravel/small pebbles in his tank?

Nine inches for a 3.5 year old RES is awfully big...

Are you positive he is a "he"? If not, you are at a good age that "she" would be gravid, and what you are describing sounds about right. Also, such a big turtle at that size would also suggest a "she". Can you post photos of the underside of the tail pulled out and the front claws?

I know if you feed too much lettuce, the poo turns liquidy, so you could maybe feed extra lettuce?

I agree with some of the others. He sounds really big to only be 3 1/2 years old. It does sound like a she. Anyway, sorry I don't know why your turtle is constipated. I hope you find out though! Sorry! ;)
