On the nesting box, there are some links at the bottom of the page on this site that link to other sites that give more detail. Also, I recall someone on here had success with snake bedding as the substrate for a turtle nest.

The trick is getting the turtle to accept the nest. Turtles can be very picky about where they lay their eggs. The best success seems to be letting them lay outside. They seem to like softened dirt - like in a flower bed - and a somewhat sheltered location - like under some bushes. You have to, of course, watch them every minute when they are outside.

And yes I don't think you need worry about it for awhile. You should notice a marked behavior change when the time comes - very restless, trying to get out the tank, loss of appetite.

On the bulb, we recommend an Exo Terra Repti Glo 26 watt 5.0 compact fluorescent. Available in the reptile section or (cheaper) at on-line stores. If you can't find it (and you should be able to, it's pretty popular) look for something that says on the packaging "UVB" and gives a percentage (like 5.0 or 5%). Bulbs that say "basking bulb" or "full spectrum" will not do - it has to say specifically UVB or it won't give your turtle what she needs. 10.0 is often too strong. Less than 5.0 is too weak. Less than 26 watts is probably too weak.

Thank you very much for the great info!

I have some REALLY good and REALLY bad news as well.

Bad News: My cousin's turtle was taken by a predator while on his daily outside visits :( He does not want to get another turtle so...

Good News: He offered to give me his entire tank and all of the equipment!

The tank is HUGE! I don't know how many gallons. He gave me a filter and a heater to go along with it. The filter has been working great this past night and the heater keeps the water from 75 to 79 F. Then I moved all of the stuff that was in my old tank to the new tank (excluding heater and filter, and I returned those without a problem).

I noticed that his current basking dock is way too small. My dad said he would build a supporter underneath the TetraFauna Decorative Filter so the top would be elevated above the waterline. That is going to be a temporary fix until he builds an above-tank basking and nesting area. I am also going to go and buy some green plants (probably fake) to decorate her habitat more.

Take a look at the photos and tell me what you think!

Oh, and I think this should be moved to the Indoor Habitat section somewhere.

There is a little button next to your posts. It says edit. It allows you to change an old post, so that you dont have to make another. And if there are no posts after your post, you are able to completely delete a post.

Thought you might want to know.

Its horrible that his turtle got taken...He should have never let it out of his sight.
I hope the new tank works well for you and your turtle.

I would skip any bulb that is intended for desert animals as that might produce too much UVB.

Your turtle is very cute. it looks pretty darn healthy. Definitely go with the bigger tank and I like the 26 w 10.0 reptibulb thing for my uvb light. Your turtle looks very docile. Does it let you handle it and feed it by hand?
I have two female red ear sliders.
Chimpy - 5.5 inches
Chompy- 6.0 inches
Both were born about 7/2007
Got them -- 9/2007
