How big of a tank is the one you're currently using? If the larger one is trying to bite the smaller one, I'd give the smaller one his own set-up until he grows some. And I'd start planning for that bigger tank (how big were you thinking--what are the shell lengths of the two turtles?). But even if you put them in a larger tank, there's a change they still won't get along.

Shouldn't you seperate them for about 90 days just in case of a disease or something?

Yes. Quarantine your turtles before you introduce them to any other specimen. It was reduce the chance of your other turtle getting ill if perhaps your new turtle is.
Quaratine should take about 90-180 days.

It is never a good idea to introduce turtles before the 90 day quarantine period and never good to do if they are different sizes. There have been documentations on the larger turtle killing the smaller ones both by accident and as an act of aggression. Please be careful with both of them and separate them for the time being.

After some time when both of them are closer in length, you can slowly introduce them a little at a time over the period of a few days building up the time each day. And then if there is still signs of aggression you must be ready to provide each with their own setup permanently.

For a 2.5" RES a 10 gallon tank is way too small much less for another turtle. The big turtle is probably very territorial about the little space he's got. I have a 75 gallon with 2 2.5" RES. They can go for over an hour without even seeing each other. Allready have my eye on a 150 gallon..:)

If you do buy the 40+ gallon tank you can use the 10 gallon for the lil guy as he gets introduced to the bigger turtle....
