Fish is not a must for turtles. Actually its considered more of a snack for them.

Main fish that are fed to turtles are guppies and rosy reds/tuffies.

STay away from goldfish, there high in fat. As for the other fish yea they can eat them but why would you wanna buy pricey fish just to feed to your turtle?

Turtles get Vitamin A from foods

To prevent MBD, you use a UVB light, and calcium (cuttlebone, backing removed, is a great source)

Yes, UVB is a definite must for a turtle. As is plenty of calcium. Keep a cuttlebone in the tank and he/she will snack on it when he/she craves calcium.

For vitamin a, once a week servings of carrot, steamed sweet potato, cantelope, or other orange or yellow veggie will provide all they need.

Another important vitamin is vitamin e. Once a week serving of steamed sweet potato, blueberries, turnip greens, tomato or apple peel will provide.

munkly, my RES is in his 8th year, and he wouldn't know what to do with a live fish if he saw it. He's been doing fine with the fishless diet he has. :D

Young turtles need high protein foods should it be fish, high protein pellets, baby dried shrimp, worms, crickets.
So not necessarily feeder fish, but make sure he eats his meat :)
