oki the subject tells all ... like always i really am worried abt my turtles shell im nt sure if thts wt u call shedding? ... just look the pics nd PLZ tell me wat can i do?? is it fungus or some thing? i doubt its shell rot though ... im worried abt fungus or someother thing... plz guyz all turtle PROS help me nd reply me asap! i dnt have internet atm as well using my frnds net bt ill keep monitoring these forums nd wait fr yr reply! thnx alot just chk the pics below ...

looks to me like either mud or mineral deposits from the water. Have you tried gently cleaning the shell with a water and a toothbrush?

I agree with jenaero. It's some sort of residue precipitating off on the shell. I know you said before you tried rubbing the shell with a vinegar soaked q tip and nothing came off. In addition to trying to gently clean the shell with water and a soft toothbrush, can you also try again with the q tip and this time rub just a little bit harder?

thans fr yr reply ... i tried with tooth brush nd water ... nd spots mama ill try again i gave him a salt bath as well ... nd tht skin whitish thing thts gone btw ... it went away on its own naturally ... so can this b a normal thing too? like is it skin shedding by any chance? nd do u think this white thing watever it is can b a threat to my turtle? im really concerned! thnx alot

It's not shedding... When a turtle's shell gets ready to shed, the top scute peels away in a more solid fashion, and there are so specks like we see here. This is most likely a mineral deposit, which as said should be cleaned by soaking your turtle's shell only (do not submerge the head) in salt water, then scrubbing it under relatively warm running water with a toothbrush. Scrub hard, but not too hard. Your turtle is not going to like this at all, so, hold it with both hands while it soaks, and during scrubbing have someone you know hold it with both hands.

I would not scrub with salt. Very dilute salt solution is a mild disinfectant and can be useful for combating bacterial infections. However, this doesn't look like an infection. Additionally, salt is abrasive and I don't think you need abrasion on that shell right now.

If you've put a lot of salt in the water or on the shell, maybe what's making it white is....salt. Rinse him well with clean fresh water and see if that takes off the white.

I would never scrub a shell hard. Besides, "hard" means different things to different people and I'd be very concerned about a person whose personal definition of "hard" is REALLY hard doing damage to a shell or hurting a turtle. Always be gentle with a turtle. Especially the seams between the scutes are quite sensitive and too much pressure will cause pain as well as potential damage.

@ spots mama exactly! thts y i dnt even feel like touchin turtle much nd tkin him out of my aquarium as he doesnt like to b bothered ... bt i did the salt thing with tissue instead nd nothin happened! btw .. this time when he goes in water... the white doesnt go off even in water his shell has a diff color its more like greyish now ... nd some part of shell looks to me in water sometimes tht its comming bak to green :S .. dnt knw ... nd my aquarium is full clean i cleaned it A-Z and no salt water now this white thing lookas a natural process to me somehow :S ... i googled fr hrs bt cant find anything similar to this .... do u guys think this can b fungus? i took him out in sun today fr 50 mins with water basking area etc! .... and turtle is full active and there is no chng in his behaviour at all ... so i have no clue at all abt this white nd how he got it etc... he did shed skin nd i saw manyyyyyy scutes in aquarium! when i cleaned it can this b the case tht he has shed skin bt new one is taking long or something to grow bak :S wat do u guys suggest me now to do? have tried vinegar , salt bath sun bath everythin wt to do now? even chng water always

Oh my God.. the shell is completely 'white'... even in the water too? Hmm I have no idea what happen to Keechu shell after all advices, tips to help your turtle.. looks getting worst. Have you get your UVB lights? On the way or still waiting to buy it?

thnx fr cheerin me up azfar ... bt tht other turtle my cuzns he died today :S ... stopped eating nd just heard frm her tht she died ... so im now even more worried abt keechu ... dnt knw wt to do nd no i CANT BUY UVB all those sites tht said they will ship to pak when i go to payment method pakistan is nt listed there its LIKE OMG!!!!! WTH!!! u cant believe how mad i am at this ! im dyin to get uvb nd i cant get it ... my cuzn will b comming to pak in summers now july or so hez the only hope now :S ... i do tk keechu out in sun fr 40-50 mins though nd sit with him so nothin can disturb him ... i watch him daily nd always whisper to him tht .. KEECHU DONT U EVER LEAVE ME!! haha thts insane bt thts me :D ... 90% reason fr shell is mineral deposits nd i will purchase filtered water now frm market nd put tht in aquarium nd then hopefully the mineral deposits will shed off thts the only thing left to do :S plz all of u PRAY tht its nothing serious nd my turtle gets well soon! nothing is > then prayers

Just a quick suggestion: if you can't use UVB bulb, use the morning sun

It's free. You just need to spare some time basking your turtle

yea i always do tht shell is becoming better in water now .. bt when he dries off it still is white :-/

It looks like what I've got, but far more advanced, maybe he doesnt bask right or maybe you just dont clean it enough.
I took a soft towel or a baby toothbrush, tap it in water a little bit and just clean the whole shell softly. It should help.

@ parasna .. yea i did same fr shell iused cloth qtip nd tooth bursh in water shell is 100% bak to normal now ... took me 5 days to do this ... nd i clean turtles aquarium every week nd chng water daily :p ... dont hv UVB lite just fr which i take him out to sun daily
