it can be a sign of not enough calcium in the diet. do you ever offer cuttlebone?

no, but I have an extra for my tortoise should I offer if? Is it ok in the water?

It's fine so long as you peel the plastic backing stuff from it.

Some RES are also extra aggressive. You might want to look into a different dock (acrylic above tank, pvc/tile, cork).
