Urgent Care :: UPDATE: On The Missing Shell Scute.

So I took my turtle to the Vet this morning and he told me that my turtle had shell rot. He said it could have been caused by a number of things such as the living conditions or the turtles immune system.

So he told me to dilute some bedidine until it is a pink-ish color and put it on the area twice a day, and he also gave me some SSD cream that I have to put on there twice a day after I do the bedidine.

In a week I go back for a check up. Hopefully this works. I've taken my turtle to this Vet before when it had a Vitamin A deficiency and he helped me so hopefully he is right again this time!

Wow that doesn't look like a shedded scute to me, :O. Um, looks like some kind of shell damage is there a way animals could have gotten into your tank to hurt him? Is there any other turtles present in the cage If so then maybe one of your other turtles bit him, which is common, doesn't look too good maybe take him to a herp vet. Also any sharp objects in the cage that could have done that to him? Or rough objects?

Welcome. It looks like bone has been exposed and it's bleeding in one area. I'd take him in to be seen by a herp vet and get something to treat the area with.

How big is the tank? How many sliders are in it? How big are the sliders (shell lengths without the curve of each)?

Is there anything abrasive in the tank?

you know I didnt leave the lid on all the way the other day and he does have a rommate about the same size maybe a tad bit bigger. Other than this area his shell is nice and ahrd.

And there is kind of this log tunnel thing thats very rugged. I'll take that out now.

Sorry, I missed your response. $crewhead is right---the tank is way too small for them.


No matter how it happened, take him to a herp vet and have that area treated.

Wow that is WAY too small for them invest in looking for an 80+ gallon tank, It might have been aggression issues, which is very common, or that log but listen to Marisa she is experienced in turtles..

It looks like part of his shell was ripped off? Do you know of anyone that might've wanted to 'help him shed' by pulling some of his shell off?

Yeah they were given to us by a neighbor [cause i guess he bred them and i didnt know they were illegal] and I'm trying to do the best I can for them but I was just caught so off guard by the amount of care and money I'm having to invest into them.

If anyone is still listening my boyfriend and I have decided to split the turtles up. I will keep this one and he is going to take the other one. Hopefully this will be better and will rule out the question of possible agression. I had to work today but tomorrow I will take my poor turtle to the vet.

that sounds good to me too. There are ways to create new turtle habitats that are very inexpensive - using, for example, a stock tank or rubbermaid tub instead of a glass aquarium. If you'd like some pointers on this, just let us know. Let us know how it goes with the vet.
