Urgent Care :: swollen eyes?

I just got back from the vet yesterday to get some nolvasan for my RES's shell fungus, and I soaked him for 10 minutes yesterday and today with diluted 1:10 nolvasan:water mixture.

I then noticed his eyes had trouble opening. Is it swollen? I called the doctor and they said nolvasan could not have caused it since it was very mild.




What could be the problem? I feed him carrots once in a while for some Vitamin A.. and I also gave him some turtle eye drops yet his eyes are still closed. Also when he does struggle to get his eye open it looks fine. It's not red or anything.

This just happened? How deep was the water your soaked your turtle in? Was he able to place his head in the solution for any length of time?

How bad is the fungus? I've always rubbed affected areas of the shell with a q-tip soaked in Nolvasan, not soaked the turtle in it.

My doctor suggested I soak him in it. The fungus is pretty bad.. maybe around 17% of his top shell, like 85% of his bottom shell has it.

The water was just deep enough to let his head stick out, but he could still stick his head inside the solution.

Might the bacteria from the fungus have caused it?

I doubt the fungus could have caused it---he's had the fungus for a while and it didn't affect his eyes, did it? His shell in the pics doesn't look all that bad to me, which is why I asked how bad it was (didn't see the plastron, though).

How are the eyes today? If you haven't done so, stop the Nolvasan for a few days and see if the eyes improve.

You've changed nothing else in the tank? Lighting, perhaps?

Well hes fine today, thanks a lot marisa.

I just did a water change and dry docked him for a night along with giving him some carrots to see if it would help.

I only soaked his plastron in the nolvasan now and q tipped his carapace like you suggested.

You know, for some reason your situation came to mind last night and I got to thinking---a 1:10 solution would be 10% Nolvasan, right? To me, this is pretty strong. I've only seen it recommended to be used at 2% strength. I bought some already mixed from the vet once, and it was already diluted to 2%. I have a bottle of undiluted chlorohexidine now, and that's what I dilute it to when it's used. Keep it out of your turtle's eyes, especially if you're using it at the strength you said you were.
