I would say that in the future, yes, any extreme pH's aren't good in the long term. You mentioned a water change, how much water did you change? You should never do a full tank change unless necessary, and 25% water changes shouldn't affect the pH that greatly. If the pH was that off of 7, you should definitely have your water looked at because it will be bad for human health too. I think the commercial water fix saved you this time, but find out where the problem lies!
