Turtles are good at getting themselves stuck in tight places so you need to make sure that his setup is safe in that regard. Even healthy turtles (with the use of their back legs) have drowned in their tanks because they got stuck in awkward places.

DavidY is right - anything a turtle can get stuck in he will - so check your tank carefully.

On your original question about the baby being impacted - now that you know he's eating, he should also be pooping. Have you seen that this is going on?

Turts take a long time to recover from illness and injuries. The fact that he can't (or won't) move his back legs makes him more prone to getting stuck. Keep the decorations to a minimum till he recovers.

Just thought that I would give everyone and update and say thanks!

"Turtis" is doing well. He is growing quickly and very active. While he doesn't swim with his back legs ( they kinda dangle behind him), he does use them to climb onto rocks and they seem to function normally. I wonder if he just doesn't use them because he couldn't when he was first introduced to water and so is accustom to not using them?.?.

He also has two 2 fantail goldfish in his tank ( that can hide in the rocks in the corners) but has never made a pass at them - he did take a bite at the small pleco though....

He isn't fast enough just using his front legs to get them and he is well fed with pellets and veggies so maybe he doesn't see the need to work too hard.

Anyway - I wanted to post an update and say thanks! He is a happy turtle and my daughter in thrilled. It looks like next spring/summer we are are considering installing a pond/area for them (we now have 3 turtles at home) to go outside as everyone is outgrowing their tanks....

And I know where I can come for info and help when we decide to do it! I understand that that is a whole new ballgame!

Take care everyone

It is so good of you to let us know how it's going. So often we never hear the outcome, and I do wonder. Sounds like Turtis is a neat little guy - and tough! I hope the pond works out. Ponds are really neat!
