Hi. I'm new to this hobby as I recieved my turtle from my roommate who works at a dental assistant and found it trying to crawl into the office where she worked at. She found some shell bits not to far away so I think he/she is quite a baby. The creek next to the office was rather foul and she didn't want him to be living in polluted waters. I hope to learn a lot more about Numa (We named it after the dentist that works there) and hopefully give it a good home.

do you know what species of turtle you have?
i have a ybs(yellow bellied slider) and a map turtle.
2years old and allready 8".
can you post a pic of your new turt?

anyone who is willing to give a turt a loving home is a great parent but it takes a lot of work.

Numa looks a lot like a RES, but he/she dosen't have any red ears; just yellow markings on a dark green shell. I am moving the turtle into a 30 gal breeder tank which should be fine for the next year and a half. I'm going to be moving back to Seattle in the winter of 2008 where I have access to a larger tank. As soon as everything is put together, I'll post a picture of Numa.

do you have a UVB light, basking area, heater and a filter because those four things are vital for a healthy turt?

That sounds like a nice size tank for your baby. What state are you in right now? That might help in identifying the turtle. Does the underside of the turtle have any red colors or special markings?

I'm about to go get a filter and a heater. Judging from the posts here, a Rena Filstar xp3 seems to be the way to go, but I think that it might be a bit much for the tank as it's filled a little more than halfway. I was looking at the Eheim classics as they have a lower flowrate for the same size tank, but I like the tray design of the Filstars better. I'm heading out today to get the heater (a stealth), the filter and some other things to make it feel at home.

I'm in Virginia. As for Numa, there's red on the bottom of the shell on the outer edge, but the rest of Numa's underside is a golden yellow.

Sounds like a painted turtle to me. They're a lot like the RES in almost every way except the markings. Beautiful turtles too.

A couple of pictures of Numa, I took them with my camera phone as my digital was needing batteries. His "ears" are yellow not red, but other than that, he looks like a RES.

I agree, with some red on the shell but not on the ears it sounds like a painted turtle. They are particularly beautiful.

Your setup looks awesome. Your turtle will be very happy! Pretty soon, though, you'll need to take the gravel out from the bottom because turtles will eat it and it kills them - they get impacted and also it cuts them up inside. Very sad. Another downside to gravel is that it's very hard to clean. You can replace it with a few large river rocks. Turtles like to play with the big rocks, they're harmless, they look good and they are easy to clean.

The gravel is in there right now because Numa likes to dig in it, but I figure that as the turtle gets older like you say, I'll remove it.

looks a bit like a painted turtle to me, i didnt see much red on the shell but i did see some.
good idea with the gravel because gravel can only cause problems for a turt as they grow older.
