Hi, I'm new here and I have a lovely male RES named Billy. He's apx 3 3/4 inches and I know he's a male because he's shown "it" to me quite a few times. lol. I've had him for a year. I am eternally grateful to this forum for helping me raise him to be a healthy and happy as possible.

Greetings and welcome to the forum! I've got a male too - named Spot. He's about 4 years old. Does Billy have his long front toenails yet?

This is the best recent pic I have of him since he's scared of the camera:



His nails seem kind of long to me, they look a little longer in person than in the pic for some reason. What do you think? His tail is really long and fat though.

His nails may be starting to grow. They've got a ways to go though! If he's been showing you his stuff, though, there's no question! He's a teenager right now!

He's beautiful. His lips and shell and toenails are very yellow. Does he eat a lot of carrots?

Nope, no carrots. I've been feeding him Reptomin, Romaine Lettuce, Collards and Red Leaf Lettuce.
And I'm nervous about the "freddy krueger nails" that I may be looking at in the future. lol.

That's a really nice looking RES.

I think those freddy kruegar nails are cool! They certainly are a conversation starters.

I love the nails as well. I'm just nervous about him taking a chunk out of my skin when I pick him up in the future.

Yeah! What will really get you is the nails on his back feet. A RES's back legs are incredibly strong. And their back feet grow to be enormous! I always use a towel to keep from getting gouged when I pick Spot up. When he does get me he scratches right through my skin. When Billy does this to you, be sure and put Neosporin on it or it will get sore!

hello! do you have any more pics of the tail? His nails are short... are you sure it was his penis?

Yep, that's definitely what I've been seeing. I don't have a good pic of his tail now. But I've been seeing that black thing every so often since he was 3 1/2 inches. Sometimes it even comes out while I'm cleaning his shell under the faucet and it touches my hand. And he's not 4 inches yet, maybe that's why his nails look short.
