Hello! I'm from Alberta and we own two RES who are at least 10 years old (that's how long we've had them). They're both female but they're named Spike and Speedy, and are BIG. I always say they're the size of dinner plates cause that's the easiest comparison!! When we got our turtles, it was a rescue - they had been kept in a 10 gallon aquarium which even then was much too small for them. We didn't know a lot about them when we first got them, and there was limited resources for a while to consult but recently I found this link again and have been learning a lot. We're trying to introduce the turtles to the diet they should be having - regular greens, more vegetation etc. but being a new diet they're not real crazy about it yet. I have a couple of care questions I'll post in the General Care board... about their shells which is probably due to their improper diet.
Anyhow, after that long novel, it's nice to be back here and learning! I just hope my lack of turtle education hasn't hurt my poor little girls!

Wow, you've got some big RES! How nice of you to rescue them and give them a great home for 10 years. You'll find a lot of great tips on here, especially on diet-- I never realized how much variety I could add to my turtle's diet until I starting looking at the nutrition tips on here.

Hi Meg and SpotsMama! Thanks for the welcome... yep the turtles have become a part of the family for sure! We love them and their little personalities!
I'm also learning what a variety of foods they can be fed, and am going to be browsing the Nutrition boards in the next while to get more information. This is a great site!!
