I found an 11 inch long red ear slider. Is this big?

Hello there,

Yesterday I found what appears to be a red ear slider. Are there any other turtles with a red mark behind the eyes? If not, I have found one with an 11 inch long shell (measured with a cloth tape measure from end to end including the hump) and is 27 inches in circumference. Is this a large red ear slider or a different type of turtle?

Thanks much,
Rich Braswell

That's the typical size for an older female RES. Where'd you find it?

Hello Steve,

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if it was larger than normal or a typical size or if a local zoo would be interested in it if it was exceptionally large. Anyway, I was putting away laundry upstairs yesterday and I happened to look out the window and saw 'big red' walking across my front lawn. I knew all the neighborhood kids would want to see it so I put it in a 2 foot by 4 foot pen on the grass. It looks like we'll be putting it in the bayou tonight, which is where it may have come from. With it's head and tail protruding out, it is about 17 inches long and is the largest turtle I've ever caught. The kids think it's great.

Thanks again,
Rich Braswell

I'd like to see that too! She may be a female out looking for a nest to lay her eggs in!

Good for you for letting her go. Be sure she's in not where she could get hit by a car or anything.
