hi
my partner and i received a RES for christmas. i am a self proclaimed turtle freak and our friends thought it would be neat to get us one. i was extremely hesitant as i know they are alot of work, but i am willing to take this one. i have gone out to a pet shop and asked for nothing but the best which (thanks to christmas bonus') i was able to purchase. anyway 1 month and counting and tango seems to be quite happy. i am just appreciative of sites like this where i can get very helpful info from other res owners.

welcome and i cant wait to see pics of your little guy/girl....what size tank did you get....i have only been using this site for a little while and i can honestly say i have learned so much from the ppl here and i know you will too

after reading here, i quickly re-did his setup so he no longer has the gravel in there.

yeah i love pics of babys cause they are so green and cute...i got mine from an ex-co worker and she didnt take very good care of my baby :( . the day i got him i went to the pet store(little one near my house)....i spent so much that first night cause i wanted to make sure he was taken care of the right way.....needless to say i ended up spending a lot more money in the long run because we upgraded a lot the first year and now we just bought an 80 gallon tank so shermen is very happy now.
1 RES-shermen (2yrs old i think)
1 betta-bubbles (1 1/2 yrs old)
1 Cool kid- Jeremiah (3 yrs old)

its funny because the people who sold it to my friends who gave it to us, told them that a)the overhead lamp would provide enough heat for the water b)gravel is perfectly fine and turtles wont eat it c)no viatmins or calcium supplements were needed d)filters were not needed they are just added expenses and the list goes on. needless to say once i realized what i needed for a healthy turtle to live etc i went out and changed his setup, bought tons and even called up the store they bought it from and proceeded to give them the riot act. it pisses me off that they are selling turtles and have no idea on how to properly take care of them or give proper instructions for that matter.

i love tango. he is the best. not really interactive at this point as he just hides but that is expected and i am fine just watching him after a stressful day... sounds stupid buts i find it so relaxing!!!

i totally agree....shermen was a great addtion to our family....some people dont like the waterfall sound some filters make but i find it very relaxing.

I understand about the misinformation you got regarding RES care. It's a very common story. It's too bad the people selling the turtles aren't around to see the consequences of their carelessness. It's so good to see someone like you who's making a genuine effort to do the right thing.

That doesn't sound stupid at all. I think most, if not all of us here feel the same way. They can be so entertaining. :)

Welcome Jar3d.
I don't think turtles are a lot of work at all.
If you give them a half decent environment, they thrive quite easily.

.. and ya... I find the turtle tank very relaxing.

he looked lost because we had a really crappy set up due to the advice given to us by friends relayed from the people they bought it from. he is better now and not so lost. :)

it is funny how much this little guy has taken over... i mean i just got paid today and i am normally like "okay...12 pack beer...check...snacks...check...some new clothes... check...
but now i am like
new ramp for tango...check...some more plants for tango...check... some veggies for tango...check. heh

he is worth it.

oops i forgot he is no long......i found out yestorday that shermen is indeed a girl lol....i'm still keeping her name though
