It's nice to finally find a group of people who I can post with and give me guidance with my sweetheart Chiba (chee-ba) he's an RES. I've had him for almost a year now and I want a least 3 more, they're great. Anyway, I'm glad to be here and I look forward to posting with you all.

Welcome to the forum! If I may ask, why do you want 3 more? Other than the fact that they are great, it seems like an odd number, lol.

Thanks! I said that the max number of sliders I would own wouldn't be more than 4 total. :D

I've got one. He's plenty for me. He's three and a half years old and 6 1/2 inches long. I've got him in a 100 gallon tank and, believe me, it doesn't look too big for him.

Space isn't the only issue either. They tend to fight each other. If they fight, they'll injure or even kill each other. Lot's of people wind up having to separate their RES's - which means maintaining multiple habitates.

The Nurse at the vets office said the same thing, so I figured if I put one boy and girl together in one tank and the same thing in another it would be alright. But I guess they'll fight regardless???

Yes, unfortunately. The males will harrass the females until they drive them nuts. They'll bite them too. A couple of people on here have had male/female combinations hoping it would work but ultimately had to separate them.

The females will lay eggs even when there is no male present, but they will lay eggs more often when there is a male. Egg laying is kind of messy. If you love your RES you'll work with her on it but you probably won't want any more eggs than you have to have!

Don't mean to be negative - just don't want anyone to have an unpleasant surprise.
