Hi.....I'm a new "mom" of 2 very tiny baby red ear sliders. I have 2 wild one's that we are releasing into the lake they came from this evening. I've already emailed "jenaero" in the past few weeks on how to care for our wild ones. We bought two babies born into captivity so that we could release the others, so now we are official owners/parents! I've enjoyed this web site very much as it has been extremely informative (the care sheet from the pet store is a joke), so now I've decided to join. I have several questions that I'll post elsewhere!

Welcome? What are you doing in preparation for releasing them into the wild?

Hi again! I'm so glad you decided to release them. I know it's hard but captive bred turts are the way to go. You're doing all those lil guys a huge favour :D

Thanks! We're having a little "release and goodbye" party for the wild one's tonight with all of the neighbor's kids. They're all sad, but they're also happy that we bought the 2 little baby one's to replace them. We stopped at Walmart last night on our way home from FL before we even made it here and bought a filter and light for the tank we had so that we could set it up as soon as we finished unpacking. I hated to make them travel 5 hours in a car but they seem to have done fine with the trip (I held them on my lap most of the way)! We bought them Monday night and had to keep them in a Ziploc disposable container until we got here! I was going to get them set up today, but didn't want to make them stay in that tiny container another day!

We had the first one for about 2 months, give or take. He showed up on our doorstep and didn't seem to want to leave. However, he didn't seem to want to stay either! I couldn't get him to eat any pellets, etc. Only live prey. I was buying rosy reds, ghost shrimp, and crickets every other day for him! He was about 4-5 inches. The second one showed up about 2 weeks ago and either didn't want the live prey, or didn't have a chance to get to it before the big one did (this one was only about 2-3 inches). And he wouldn't eat the pellets either. We released them last night and they were both so happy to dive right back into that lake! I told my son we would go feed them from time to time, but there's so many turtles out there knows who we'll end up feeding! We now only have the two babies we bought in Florida. One is about 1" and the other is about 1.5".
