I am new to the forum, but I have had my 2 RES for a little over a year now. My son bought them for me on his way home from school from a man infront of a bank. I must say I was not happy at all at first. But I have grown to love my turtles. They are so interesting and have such great personalities.
They were smaller than a quarter when he brought them home. I cannot believe how they have grown in this time. The bigger of the two is almost 6 inches long and the smaller about 4-5. We have moved them into different sized tanks as they grew and are now in a 40 gal breeder tank. We have a canister filter for filtration. The basking and uv lamps. WE have a platform for basking with a ramp. It is big enough to hold the two of them with room. We do have mid sized rocks/gravel for the bottom. We have an auto feeder for pellets that feeds 2 x per day and we feed them manually crickets or shrimp or mealworms each evening. We have a timer set to put the lights out at 11pm and turn back on at 7am.
After reading your articles I am thinking I have two females but I will look into this further. I must say I am very curious about this. The larger of my turtles basks more than swims now and eating has slowed tremendously. The smaller has slowed a bit on the eating but is in the water most of the time swimming.. I keep track of the shells feel and I have seen them shed skin and shell as they grow this is so very interesting. It did concern me at first. I must say that there is so much interesting information available online and I am happy about that. I have read the book on red earred sliders. We have fed them live fish. and they love love love crickets. Dry of course. I keep a scuttle bone in there for calcium and they do eat it. They will eat romaine lettuce sometimes. They do not like carrots. They have eaten some strawberries not too much and do not like bananas.
Well I wanted to say hi and give an intro about my turtles. BTW Their names are frick and frack.
