I just recently adopted Squirtle who is a RES supposedly, however it isn't showing any signs of red by its ears so I am unsure. We have been reading non stop since we picked it up on Thursday from a friend to make sure we knew how to properly take care of it. It is 2 inches right now and seems to be doing so much better in the set up we have put together than the tiny shoe box tank it was in before.

You know I was thinking that too. But my friend whom I got her/him from was pretty adamant that it was a RES. I'm going to try and get a better picture tonight and post it to see what others may think.

Painted Slider, the amount of red can very from a little like the picture to almost the entire bottom being red.

Welcome to the site! RES don't always have red ears... could be orange or yellow too.

I've read that some RES have yellow stripes; however, RES typically have prominent markings on the plastron and and YBS have little or none...so based on the pic, I'm leaning towards YBS
